Heard about this happening a couple times, while others have run the stock maf without issue. Is there some plausible reason why this would happen in one instance and not in another?

I had issues last night with Al tuning my car, came up with a bad maf. We will test and find out. We were tuning 3076 and alcohol.

Yeah, as the fins in the MAF get damaged and are no longer parallel with airflow, it acts as little wings which crush the honeycomb in on itself..

I think RRaulston also had a Maf honeycomb collapse on him (I think it was who sent it to me as a donor for the MAF connector molds I made)

This can explain why some people never have a problem, then at some point it happens..

I always planned on moving a large volume of airflow and upgraded my MAF very early on for that reason with the intention of retaining the stock ECU, I literally waited until reflash technology caught up with my planning before I went to a bigger turbo..

Its really not a very common occurrance.. But it has happened often enough to be documented...

before I get a dozen more PMs about alternatives and options, search for my blowthrough sensor thread and read it.. then check out some of the options available..

MalibuJack,

what would be the ideal set up with a custom flash? is the maft pro a good route to go? i will have the same turbo but more mods running around the same psi. definitely appreciate the help as i would like to prevent this from happening to me.

I am carefully epoxy-gluing my MAF screen to my MAF housing. Also, since this happened to me, Tuning Technologies moved my BOV-to-intake tube further away from my MAF. The AMS intake system that comes with their turbo kit leaves the BOV return tube very close to the MAF and the angle is also a little too close to 90 degrees as opposed to a more acute angle that points the dump back at the turbo....

After our brief PM exchange, I decided that I agreed with your assessment and asked Drifto to do exactly that in fabricating the intake setup for the GT35R. It can be seen in this photo:

Hopefully, directly the BOV vent directly toward the compressor will prevent this situation from occurring. If not, it's on to 'Plan B'.

We'll know by Friday morning if the stock maf screen - Epoxy'd in and far from the Bov dump, will hold whp in the high 500s and wtq in the 525 range. If all goes well, I'll FINALLY be drag racing my car on Saturday.
