Built motor or Turbo kit first

Just wondering on the path you guys would choose or have chosen. Once I get a beater to drive every day I plan on really making some power with the evo. I don't want to put a big turbo on it and have the stock internals give up after a month. I really think both should be done together but money will make me decide one before the other.

Since you have a DD I would do the turbo first and motor second. If it was your primary form of transportation I would build the motor first. Reliability is a distant 2nd to performance when it's your weekend warrior.

Wondering if any of you guys are saying out of experience or opinions. I appreciate them but would also like some input from people who have actual experience.I t would just suck going through the time and expense to do the turbo kit and then have the motor give way a short time later. I am just thinking about minimizing the time the car would be out of commision. Thanks.

I am doing engine first do to it being my DD and not wanting any downtime. If you have a daily driver then a turbo kit would be fine first. It all depends on your goals. What kind of power are you looking for? Anything extreme like 500 or above then the built motor is almost required first or at the same time as the turbo.

I went built engine first but my #1 rod bearing decided that for me. Looking back it would have been the right decision anyway.

build the motor first... if you blow the engine is going to be much more expensive to fix.

I installed a 35r kit first. I put 472 whp down on a mustang dyno. A rod bearing failed after 15,000 miles of severe abuse (i drive the car very hard all the time). In all, my car has a bit over 60,000 miles.

I will be putting in a 2.3 next week. I am happy with the path that I chose. Especially since I was gonna build the block eventually. The stock bottom end is very strong and will support over 500 whp, but know one knows for sure how long.

I would say throw on a 35r kit and tune conservatively (shoot for 450 - 475 whp). You will love the car and it should last quite a bit. just don't race every R1 that crosses your path like I did...

You will hear from others that the block is good for 500, 550, 600 etc... Its up to you how far you are willing to push it...

Good luck!
