Whining issue
we did the boost leak test and I gotta get the stock gasket for the turbo out to the lower IC greddy pipe... huge leak there.. once we do that gonna do another leak test to assure pipes are solid.. and then test drive should be resolved there..
More confusing data points
OK, hate to muddy the waters but I got a few interesting bits of data related to this issue. I have a 2006 Evo IX MR. When I was shopping and test driving for my new car, I encountered several cars that produced this whining sound. I would most like to describe it as a "jet engine" whine. Almost all of the cars at this particular dealership made the noise. I asked the sales guy what it was, and he told me it's the turbo, and it's normal. I replied that usually a turbo that makes a jet engine whine is about to bite the dust, but he disagreed. Anyway, I did not pursue the matter further with him, and I was not overly concerned, by the reasoning that if a majority of these brand new Evo's made that noise, it probably wasn't something bad. However, this dealership was far from home, and I ended up buying from a dealer closer to where I live. One curious thing though, was that *none* of the Evo's at the 2nd dealership made that same whine. The Evo MR that I eventually bought, later would make that whine while the engine was cold, and under low rev's & no boost. When I pushed it, the whine would go away. I asked the mechanic at the 2nd dealership if he knew what it could be, and he told me it was the sound of the air whistling through the narrow intake port to the airbox. I'm not sure I buy that either. Finally, and most interestingly, I came across an article in the April 2005 issue of Popular Science (sorry, no link. This is a real magazine printed on actual paper). The article in question was actually about testing the realism of Microsoft's Forza racing simulator, and had two experienced race drivers/video game buffs drive several cars in the simulator, then drive the real thing on the actual track (Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia). Several high performance cars were included in the study, including an Evo VIII which I assume was stock. It was very interesting that in the article, they wrote that as the Evo flew past them it "sounded like a jet". So there you have it, a very confusing mashup of datapoints. After considering all of this, I am still left wondering, when I picked out my Evo from the lot, did I get a "good one".
Finally, a bit of info that is inconsequential to this topic, but very gratifying to me as an Evo owner: the Evo posted a better lap time in the Popular Science article than all of the other cars except one. The cars it beat included: VW Golf R32, C6 Corvette, Acura NSX, Lotus Elise. The car that it lost to was the Porsche Carrera GT.

The whine at cold startup is probably the cogged belt that drives the rear balance shaft. This belt will often whine when new and properly tensioned. As it stretches and loosens the sound will disappear.
