WELCOME TO MY WORLD.

I had the EXACT same problem. I have the JDM Evo IX GSR with the "Magnesium" turbo. Mine failed within 3000kms. Same as you, I was still breaking in the car, wasn't doing anything funny. No boost controller, car 100% stock. I even JUST had it in for servicing to check all fluid levels and so on where tip top shape.

My Mag turbo looked exactly like yours. The dealer INSISTED it was user damage or some stupid sh1te like that, and refused warranty. IN FACT, they informed me that Japan has a HUGE backorder for the Mag turbos as they are failing all over the place.

Singapore, HK (where i am), Japan are having countless Mag turbos fail. My Mag turbo failed, another fellow's also failed.

In any case, I looked at what was tried-and-true, and went with a Evo 8.5 Ti turbo. The 8.5 Ti turbo is slightly smaller than the 9, but I could not notice any difference. Spool-up seems about the same either way. If you want to go with Mitsu turbo, this is the one to get, as people have been boosting huge numbers on the 8.5 Ti turbo and it produces very solid figures.

it does look like it just exploded/failed on it's own. It would'nt hurt either way to check your ic piping and clean it out just to make sure nothing got in there. If you are on your own for finding a turbo, it may be best to find someone on these forums that's recently upgraded and ask if they're willing to sell their stock turbo.

first off i have to ask where did u get the car? was it a mitsu dealer?

second off, if i was in your position i would contact mitsu directly and have them warentee a new one, but not the mag wheel.

thirdly, if u want to upgrade the turbo while keeping the stock manifold and stock ecu, i would sugest a 20g-9-5 from BUSCHUR RACING. it has proved itself for me and many others in the performance and reliability.

I'm sure it's illegal in any country not to honor a warranty on a new car. Get what you paid for man!
I understand what you are saying....

but even where I am in Trinidad and Tobago..There are easily about 150 evo's here.
and for the size of our country...you see these cars every day

However, the Mitsubishi dealers here know nothing about them. So no one ever takes their car back to the dealer...we all get mechanics on the outside to sort out our problems.

dumb yes...but the downtime involved and the stress of having your car at the dealers isnt worthwhile

I bought it from a Japanese showroom and imported it to my country through a friend of mine. So, no warranty issue. Nevertheless, I have asked to see if it is a recall item, so that I can send it and they might replace it. *fingers crossed*

Does it need any new tuning for the ecu for the Buschur turbo?

the pieces need to be purged from the system. remove intercooler and flush with alky till no more pices come out. small pieces can re-enter through the bov if you are recirculating. I had this happen to me and the new turbo started to get small chips on the compressor wheel.

Could you please elaborate what are the parts that need to be flushed? Small chips shouldn't have gotten into the engine, right?

The chips wont hurt the engine. Just clean all the intercooler pipes and the intercooler. main focus on the intercooler. The pieces get lodged in the cooler and can come loose later.

If you want to stay with a stock Mitsu turbo, you could try to get a US spec IX turbo. Our cars do not have the magnesium compressor wheel, but they are of the slightly larger housing type used with all IX's. Just a thought.

What I would do is get a hold of the GSR compressor wheel (non mag) and mate that with the rest of your turbo.

As snice you have the mag turbo that means it also comes with the titanium exhaust wheel, so combine that with the regular compressor wheels and you end up with something similar to an evo8 MR RS turbo with a bigger compressor housing.

So you end up with a turbo that will still spool faster and not explode on you.
