Evo 9 MR ECU Exhaust compatibility & Strut tower bolt
Hi guys, new to this forum, just picked up my red Evo IX MR with the bilsteins & BBS rims, 6sp (MR) etc
It's very nice/fast!!
already Ive managed to use the TSB posted on here to fix that horrendous passender A pillar/windscreen clicky rattle sound that was the clips, worked perfectly, and I've been able to verify the part # on my turbo isn't one of the early failure prone ones, so thanks for a quality forum!
previous rides are a 275rwkw s14.5 200sx and ...that's right...an 06 STI! I traded the 06 STI for the 06 Evo. I had the 06 STI brand new and ecutek'd it and had a fuel pump, surge baffle, STI lowering springs and 191awkw....but decided the Evo was FAR more 'me'. Anyway.
I have two questions, I know i could split them its just the ECU is my main question but about 10 minutes ago i f*d up in the garage, raising my first question so humour me this once
1 - Strut Bolt sheared Today I sheared off a strut tower thread / bolt so I have want to know, are replacement upper strut mounts with the threads on them available for the Bilsteins easily? Im in South Australia. Also would it be easy for the place I'm taking it tomorrow to drop the strut out and pop that snapped thread out and put a new one in somehow??
Id also like to be able to adjust Castor and KPI on the front and hence would it just make most sense to put adjustable upper strut mounts in right now instead of bothering to replace a stud on the stock ones?
Will it be hard for them to replace the strut thread? (The place where i go are absolute suspension experts!) i only sheared one of the 3 and i was hoping you could remove the strut and pop the broken thread out of the upper strut mount and put another one in and just refit the strut, will this be possible??
Also:
2- ECU & exhaust - it's currently stock, I'll get an ECUTek very soon. However I'd like to know, since the stock exhaust still has some rattles and squeaks despite all heat shields being removed (except underbonnet ones) I'd like to just replace it with an MRT exhaust or custom exhaust now. But will it be 'OK' with the stock ECU for a month before I reflash the ECU and tune it?
Or should I just wait and ensure ECU and Exhaust are done at the same time? this was the 'rule' with my STI but the opposite was true with my 200sx despite both being AFMs.
If anyone could have a go at answering my 2 questions rather urgently that'd be fantastic!

Here's the pics of my new beast just cant help myself its so sexy and fast!!

thanks for the help so far for a fellow paranoid evo owner!!! (and im not TOUCHING those strut nuts ever again my god cant believe it sheared even tho i used a torque wrench and exactly 33lbs like in the factory service manual, argh!)

sorry just really worried about the strut top thread (the top hat thread i sheared, 1/3) and whether I can go ahead and put the full exhaust system on and just do the ECU in a few weeks...
can anyone advise, gotta go to bed soon and drop car off at suspension place in the morning..
Anyone know if whiteline KCA 386 will fit the Evo 9 too, if so i can possibly replace stock strut top hats with KCA386 but unsure if it makes any diff if im running the bilsteins or not cos I am, and maybe these are designed for stock struts only...argh!!! help!

will they be able to put a new thread onto the existing top hat maybe?

Putting the aftermarket exhaust is not going to create any problems although with the IX you won't notice any gains until you get flashed. If you don't mind me asking, where did you find the TSB on the rattling issue that you had? I'm having the same problem but have been unable to find the TSB that you're talking about.
Thanks,
Tony
Thanks,

its the best thing ever when you fix it man
it works like a treat, made my new car experience perfect again. thank god! : heres the link:

(not sure which page sorry!)
the instructions within the TSB though are here to help you / save time just follow these and your clicky/creaky rattle from A pillar will be gone woooohoooo!!
my damn mitsi dealer was scaring me saying might have to take windscreen out and they spent 4-5 days on it BAH !
was 45 min job max and thats only cos i stuffed around being perfectionist!
I AM SQUEEK FREEEEEEEEEEEEE!
TSB-05-42A-005 Released March 2005 (titled: Winshield creaking noise while driving)
1 Test drive to verify noise is coming from A pillar area
2 use a soft trim stick to remove the side windshield moulding from the cowl trim - do not remove the cowl trim for this procedure
3 obtain adhesive-backed thin felt material from BSR kit (MR991752) Cut six felt pieces, approx 70 mm x 5 mm
4 Remove the liner from the back of the felt pieces. Affix the felt on the inner clips. Affix one felt piece to each of the three inner clips Repear on the other side.
5 Be sure that the outer moulding clips (four on each side) are securely attached to the body retension stud. IF the clips are not properly attached, noise may result
6 Reinstall the windshield side moulding
7 test drive to verify the noise is eliminated.
Takes .4 hrs to do - I recommend everyone with the creak to it asap - I feel like the car has been born again - I didn't realize how much that creak annoyed me!!
OK so my air/fuels will be OK after fitting the exhaust before the flash/tune? sweet?? u sure??
also secondly, any input on the strut top hat thread issue i mentioned?
Thanks guys

During the time I have spent on this forum I dont recall anyone else shearing of a bolt on the strut mount. That may be why you get no answers. Good luck with it. Let us know if you get the bolt replaced.....

yeah I got unlucky i think the torque wrench is stuffed from brand new...far out typical luck.
doesnt matter though I've got two new Tein adjustable strut tops going on there now and the car will be ready to pick up either tomorrow or the day after!
The Tein's will allow me to adjust the camber further & castor and also are pillowball eliminating the stock rubber bush on the mitsubishi strut tops. I should be better off and it will also fix the the bolt/thread I sheared off since obviously upper mounts come with the presplined or welded threads all new etc yay)
Ill make a new thread with feedback on the tein upper mounts + bilsteins on the MR in the suspension section on Friday or something!

Well the Tein Adjustable strut tops are in with a custom alignment, and all I can say is WOW....it's made a Huge difference to the handling. Its so balanced and even and stable over ANY bumps and at any speed, and it turns in like a razor blade now it has more castor and they have given the rear end the perfect amount of camber and toe....it's just exceptional, I'm so suprised such a small mod + a wicked alignment can make such a tremendous difference...!
im pretty loathed to touch it now it's so good but I might look at a way of lowering it slightly for aesthetics sometime..
