Datalogging - Timing advance

Nope, you can't log knock w/ OBDII. Also, the data rate sucks, especially if you're logging multiple variables (as mentioned above).
Even though 2nd gen DSMs are also OBDII, we have a tool called DSMLink (www.dsmlink.com) which changes the way the stock ECU communicates, so that you can log knock and everything else the ECU sees at a high rate of speed. You can also alter timing advance, fuel trims, redline, fuel cut, and much more, which is superior to an S-AFC. The catch is that all this magic is possible only with the 95 ECU, which has an EPROM slot on the circuit board, so you can take out the existing ECU programming chip and replace it with the new.
If you're lucky, someone will figure out a way to do this on the Evo (maybe the Evo 8 has an EPROM, since it's the first in America?). Otherwise, the best option for heavy-duty datalogging is getting a standalone like the AEM EMS. For now getting an S-AFC and OBDII logger is probably your best budget logging/tuning combination, even with its limitations.

I had heard before about the OBDII connection being able to send only so many frames per seconds of data. So the more sensors you're logging the less accurate it becomes. The timing is what's going to be the most important to me. When logging the timing is it crossed referenced with engine speed to complete the X & Y axis?

You can download the windows software for free to examine the logs. www.autotap.com
I've attached a few AutoTap format logs.

Datalogging is recording what the ECU/car is doing, right?
How does this all work?
plugs into ECU, or taps in?
Do I use a laptop, or Palm?
How much is this?
Thanks in advance.

Looks like it will work for me just fine. It logs to a Palm pilot like my IBM C3 (good for nothing else ). I'm going to start logging data to make sure my SAFC2 is a tool for good and not for evil

I'm using the Pocketlogger, with good results. I wouldn't go to the track without it. Between that and the e-manage support tool software, I'm pretty well covered for tuning. The only other thing I would want is a wide band.

I think rpm vs. MAP vs. ign is going to be the most useful for datalogging. MAP is more important than MAF with respect to how it times the spark.

First off, let it be known that I have not done a lot of logging and I am not skilled yet at reading them. I'm seeing timing advance being pulled on some hard accelerations. I'll do some more runs to see if I can make any sence of it. I'm just curious if anyone else is datalogging?

Yea listen to Shape he knows whats up (again, as always)
You can only datalog knock with obd I. With obdII you can log timing advance which is just as important. I only log RPM and Timing Advance with my PocketLogger.
This damn logger has stayed with me forever. Ive cleared various CEL of friends, datalogged several tuner cars, and its been useful to me with my old Eclipse and my 660's/SAFC!!
****ty thing is, I can only get 8 or 9 samples a second even when doing the byte timing and what not...
