5 speed vs. 6 speed
+1
Dyno numbers are vapor ware anyway. They dont mean jack. Trap speeds mean more to me than any dyno queen number.
The MR is a "look at me" version of the EVO. If you want power goodies (windows locks HIDs) then get the IX SE. Its basically an MR with a 5 speed. If you are all about racing then get the RS and shutup.

So, it was fine for drag racing, but he broke it road racing? I think I remember Jon@TRE said that 1st and 2nd gears in the 6 speed were wider than the five speed, but after that the five speed had wider gears. I think he said something like 19mm wide for 1st and 2nd in the six speed and 17 or 18mm wide for the five speed in 1st and 2nd can't remember exactly though. I will see if I can find that thread and post it. He also said that
made the five speed and the company that buids transmissions for toyota built the six speed.

yes, that's exactly my reason for purchasing one.
i wish the IX SE was out the winter of 04, i would've been all over it. what's the "look at me" difference between the MR and SE? the MR has a VG? well the SE has bling wheels, which is more "look at me"?

So, in everyones opinions, is the MR 6spd good for making power for a daily driver? I am purchasing an 06' MR IX and want to add an AMS GT35R to it. Wil the 6spd accept the higher power without exploding?
No, it is mm not cm. cm would make the entire tranny rediculously large. Yes surprisingly they are that tiny!!!
But it's nothing to be surprised by, tiny well constructed metal parts can hold/transmit lots of power.
Yes, ideally the 05 MR with 6 speed would be faster than an 05 and older year model EVO equipped with a 5 speed tranny due to the torque multiplication and thus resultant acceleration. But in reality things aren't so cut and clear.

Someone in this thread indicated that the 6th gear in the 6 speed is an "overdrive"- this is not true, it's just a little taller than the 5 speed's 5th gear, not enough to be considered overdrive. The 5 speed is stronger but you should be fine with a MR if your not planning on beating the hell out of it and you change your fluids regularly, with the proper fluids. The 6 speed does shift like butter and it's a joy to drive. If you got a MR dont feel bad, it's still the flagship Evo and just be aware that 4th-6th are not as strong as 4th-5th on the 5 speed. Unless you seriously track your car it shouldnt be much of a factor.
Now that the SE has come out though it is really the better deal because of the cost difference. You get most of the MR including the aluminum roof, wheels, HID's etc. The bilstein's are nice but not for the extra 4 grand or so (your paying for the 6 speed here) you could get a really nice tuned coil over setup.

The 6 speed has a problem with cooling on road courses where its being beat on extensively. The only 6 speeds that have failed were doing exactly that. Basically the oil breaks down from being too hot and 4th gear gets sheared because its thin. Its up to you, theres a few people out there like razorlab who are making tranny coolers and havent had the issue come back, and others just switch to the 5 speed like Warrtalon. Im sticking with 6 personally, since were talking HARDCORE tracking/hotlapping which I will never probably do. Also, if you plan on going to a road course, change your tranny fluid the day before. Will probably help.
ROFL! +1 to that.
Like I just said, its not about handling power. It can take a TON of power and be just fine. Its HEAT that is the killer...theres like a 20 page thread on this topic, and another 5 threads on correct tranny fluid. You guys need to search.

that's why i use the NV4500 tranny fluid, i talked about in some threads. it's an exact equivilent 75-85 GL-4 and was designed for heat related issues in a high load cast iron-cased deisel tranny.
The only problem I have with my 6sp is first gear when it is cold out. and that is just kinda sluggish / a little hard to get into gear. after everything is warmed up it is as smooth as glass. With my mods I'm able to pull 25 - 27MPG so the 6sp is a great daily driver. I don't abuse it but I do drive it for fun some times. Never launched and it seems to be holding just fine.
The only real abuse it has gotten was when I got it dynoed. Which it may get that 2 or three more times for the rest of it's life with me.
So as someone already said if you abuse it, more than likely it will break.
