Question Signs of a failing stock clutch?

Guys, my clutch seems to be engaging at about 6-7/8th's of pedal release (close to the top), which I'm thinking is clutch wear. It still holds power when accelerating just fine, but from a standing start the 1st gear feathering is tricky without a subtle tranny shudder.

The car's still lightly modded (very) with about 15k miles --- which might make it expected, but I just wanted to affirm my suspicions about my clutch.

Thanks!

My clutch has always grabbed at the top ever since I got it brand new. If your clutch was slipping, you would notice it in higher gears where there is more load.

When in boost, your rpms should fluctuate up and down before you feel the car pull.

i thought my clutch was starting to go because my pump gas traps were down 2mph from the last time I had raced it. Then I put c16 in the tank and my traps went down to 102-103, which to me was obvious the clutch was slipping. After that it would slip anything over 75% throttle and 15psi.

I need a clutch and that is one of the signs mine was giving, also if you drop it into a low gear while your driving and floor it and the rpms shoot up faster and your not goin anywhere that is a pretty good indication that the clutch is slipping.

Mine shudders, and has been for a decent amount of time. I have about 25,000 miles, and other than the shudder from stop to just starting to roll there are NO signs of slippage. It might be a warped fly wheel or something else, but that shudder does not mean your clutch is absolutely on the way out. If it bothers you, I suggest revving to a higher rpm from a stop, at about 2k my shudder disappears. (Its also worse when the car is cold, when everything is warmed up, its almost non-existant)

Great input! I appreciate it, guys --- maybe I'm being delusional and my clutch will hold for another 30 k miles, but I think I'll start preparing for an eventual clutch swap . . . just in case . . . when my whp increases!

Thanks again!

I'm having (was having...read on)the same issue. Although I tried practicing a launch on my car last week, and I didn't let the clutch out quick enough. Needless to say I wasn't moving very fast, but I could hear the turbo spooling quickly in 1st gear. I disengauged the clutch quickly. No clutch smell, but after that situation my clutch engages VERY smooth from a dead stop in 1st gear now. Previously my 1st gear starts were so jerky, I was ready to take my car in and see what was up. My car has 43k on it on the stock clutch btw... Strange, because I thought my clutch would have fried after that mishap.

Yea, I had a theory maybe my clutch was just glazed and it needed a bit of abuse to take that "layer" off. We shall see. Im not too concerned with the issue though...

Clutch

I have the same issue. It started at 12k miles. My car shudders bad, especially in reverse and some in 1st gear. I thought my transmission or transfer case were shot. One time, I launched it a bit and like you mentioned, after that, engagement became normal again. I now have 19k miles. For a while I slipped the clutch to burn off the plates and it helped, but now, it is getting harder to get righ of the shudder. My clutch still holds more than 310 hp at the wheel. That shudder bothers me alot as it sounds like my car is falling appart.

I have 57k on the stocker. Mine shudders almost every day on the first few starts until it gets some heat in it. Then it seems to be ok. Mine also grabs high up off the floor, but sometimes it'll grab low unexpectedly. I attribute that do the damn restrictor. As long as it doesn't slip while it's engaged, it should be ok.

I have the EXACT same thing with my 03. I also just hit 25k and its getting real bad. I have never launched the car and have found if I start off with a higher rev my shudder disappers. It made me feel good to read your post.
