If no one wants to help ya out then my I suggest RRE in Santa Fe Springs. I dunno there direct website (to lazy to get the link) just go over to www.socalevo.net and you'll get all the info you need about RRE
why would you buy a non-running and not know what's exactly wrong with it. first thing to do is a compression test if you can get the motor to run over. if the motor turns over and you have compression, then you have a fuel or ignition problem.
what did the previous owner tell you about the car? Why do they think the motor is blown and why do you think it is not?
#1 need to do a compression check like people are saying.
Remember too....you could have good compression and still have a spun bearing...in which case there is probably metal in the oil. Does the motor still have oil in it? Check it for mixture with coolant. Perhaps you have a blown head gasket. The oil will appear milky if this is the case. These are just places to start.

If you have to ask you should probably have someone qualified help you out with it.
Its not difficult, but you need the guage and should know the compression tolerences and bleed down specs.
Does the engine turn over?? Have you drained the oil and checked it? Thats actually where I would start. Drain the oil and check for the obvious. If theres any coolant in there, metal shavings etc.. If it were only a spun bearing the car would probably start but there would be an obvious knock from the bottom end.

A little more information would be helpful
What do you know about the previous use and condition of the car?
Why does your buddy think the motor is "blown"?
Why do you think it's not?
How many miles on the motor?
Did you contact the prior owner and ask about any symptoms?
Does the motor turn over by hand (using a 1/2" drive on the crank pulley)?
Does the motor turn over with the starter?
What do the spark plugs look like?
Does the motor turn over smoothly with the plugs out?
Did you drain the oil and check it carefully for metal particles and coolant?
Did you drain the coolant and look for oil in the coolant?
If it needs a rebuild, they're not inexpensive, and you need to make sure that you deal with someone who knows what they're doing. RRE (Road Race Engineering) is the best in the West, and have been building 4g63T motors, including Evos, since who flung the chunk. They are HIGHLY recommended and will save you alot of money over a shop that does not regularly work on or rebuild Evo motors. You'll need to get the car down to their shop for diagnosis. I don't think they make house calls
