Syncromesh in Transfer Case

So I got a clutch install, and the shop told me they put in the right fluids. 200 miles later I get the howl. I ask them what fluids they used, and they said Synchromesh with TX-7.

I stopped driving the car immediately until I got Diaqueen LSD fluid but the noise is still there. The shop tells me I am barking up the wrong tree when I questioned their choice of oils.

Bring it to the dealership, and hope for the best?

You need a gear oil in the trancfer case. Not synchromesh. It is what caused your whine. I hate to say it but it caused your ring and pinion to wear causing the whine.

Ouch your TC is toast ... you should use either the stock fluid or an exact equivalent. Sychromesh should only be used in the tranny and never the TC .... the shop might owe you a new TC ...

Ask the shop if the better business bureau would be barking up the wrong tree if they questioned it. I CANNOT stand shops who try and intimidate customers...

wow syncromesh is way to thin for your tcase. Were there a bunch of metal shavings when you replaced the fluid?

There was metallic residue when I changed it. Not really shavings, more like flakes.

The shops defense is that I already had shavings in my TC when they did the clutch install.

haha thats not the shops defense, it happened 200 miles after you got your car back and they put the wrong gear oil in it. End of story their fault. They should have read up on what gear oils go where on the car. Stupid for them to put synchromesh in the TC. Good luck though. I dont think there will be an issue getting something out of them because they infact did screw up. Was it your first gear oil chage in the TC? Then I could see there being a little bit of shavings in there. I wouldnt really say shavings but material. Anyways, again good luck.

They dont have a leg to stand on. The transfer case was just fine until they did the gear oil change. They just had residue from the break in period. They owe you a new TC if it is infact toast.

Unfortunately I don't really have a way of getting them to do the right thing.
