Thanks for the heads up petum. I've been guilty of doing a few 6k doughnuts in my GSX. I've never had a problem. I had no reason not to think the EVO would have one either.

I know 1 thing my EVO won't be trying now...

Our fellow member MAXI has been doing donuts for years with his Evo 5, and all that failed was a front driveshaft once. He's been doing so many donuts that there is actually an avatar that some people use with his white Evo 5 doing donuts

The thing is, petem seems to not have done them right; he should have flicked the car in gear (1st gear), possibly helped a little with the handbrake, get it to slide and then floor it with the steering turned one way, but not all the way, just about 80-90%. It wasnt good to launch the car at these high rpms, from a stand, especially with the steering wheel locked on one side, but that is not a reason for all these insults!
I use that avatar...

petem, I'm with U on this one. Given the same situation, I probably would have tried to spin the car too (but I would know not to dump it with the wheel cranked 1 way). Claudius said it right about going, crank the wheel and E-Brake it, then flooring it. By doing that, it'll take stress off the initial shock of launching, + the steering wheel won't be cranked all the way. I've seen a slightly modded WRX here in NJ do crazy donuts in a parking lot, and he did it that way. AWD donuts are funky, because the car goes very wide.

I think it's kinda ****ty that the whole power steering issue is in the owner's manual. It's like Mitsubishi knows that the thing is gonna break already.

Also, I don't think aggressive driving is wrong. By the way they advertise this car (the brochure andf the TV commercials), you would think that the car can take a little beating. Maybe we should ***** at Mitsubishi for false advertisement, hehe.

Yeah, listen to Claudius guys. Petem PROBABLY made a mistake or two during his donuts due to lack of experience, but isn't that all part of the learning process ? You telling me that NONE of you guys did anything you may have regretted since you got the Evo, or ANY car for that matter?
Petem wanted to hear from what we, the evolutionm.net forum visitors, have to say about his problem, and all I read on the first page are insults calling him a moron and an idiot. Not only is that unnecessary, but definitely uncalled for. Don't forget that all of you were once newbies if you aren't one now. And for some of you, if you're gonna insult someone, at least learn proper English... I couldn't make head out of tails from some of the replies!

To Petem: Sorry for all the negative feedback regarding your problem man... I guess some people out there are more interested in insulting people when they're down then giving them a helping hand. I hope you get your car fixed soon and master those donuts . The Evo definitely should have been able to take on much more punishment then what you experienced, especially for only a few secs, so it coulda been a "lemon" mechanical failure . It happens to everyone eventually. Anyways, good luck with the repairs .

It's when you rev at high[er] RPMs when you're in neutral or in 1st gear and suddenly releasing the clutch [while in 1st gear] at those high[er] RPMs, usually when you want to launch your car... and yes... this is how those imfamous burnouts are achieved, but not always. Becareful tho'... dropping the clutch puts alot of strain on the clutch and the stock clutch on the Evo is one of its weaknesses. Do it too many times and you will need to replace the clutch rather quickly.

Yeah, if I spend 30k on a car I expect it to be idiot proof, or did you not get that option?

ok! if you are driving your new ferarri toward an open quarry ,do you expect an auto pilot to kick in and make an instant u-turn ,"quarry alert","quarry alert".

Evo donuts
It can, if you want your power steering pump to fail. Same thing happens on alot of cars and idiots like to complain about it. Pull your head out!

Dropping or dumping the clutch is revving the engine to a certain (usually high) rpm with the clutch pressed down, then lifting your foot off the clutch instantly causing all the engines power to be instantly transferred to the transmission and drivetrain. Gives a pretty good jolt but is not very beneficial to the drivetrain's health.

Frankly, if your making a mistake like that, your not experienced enough for an Evo.

Now that's a silly statement. So now we must have "experience" before applying for ownership of an EVO?....

in rally racing you rarely, if ever lock the wheel to one side.
If you're taking a sharp turn and you're understeering through the turn, no matter how much you crank the steering wheel to one side, its not going to do anything.
I've seen cars leak steering fluids cause of locking the steering for too long or high rpm at lock...

Doing donuts in the rain is easy you don't need to do anything special like drop the clutch. Just drive in a small circle with the pedal to the floor, when the boost kicks in the car will slide. there is no need to rev it up or anything like that. It is almost effortless for an Evolution in the rain. No need to beat on it.
