If you are going to have your car tuned with a flash by someone else, then why bother with the SAFC? An SAFC on top of a flash is to fine tune based on changing conditions. If you do not want to learn how to tune on your own, then getting an SAFC does not make sense.

Another thing to note is that RRE does not have a dyno. So will have to pay for the tuning and then If you want to get a dyno sheet pay for the dyno separately.

Why not go to a shop that has an inhouse dyno? There are so many of them in SoCal and they can tune. Tuning Tech is one shop that can do installs and dyno tune your car.

The 2.75 inch DP is fine. It is better for clearance of the ACD and the lower tie bars. It is even good for up to 600 hp. I have a 3 inch and it even rubbs on the RNR lower tie bar causing phantom knock. I removed the tie bar. It is meaningless anyway.

Get the fuel pump. The Walbro is a good unit. It does wine, but you barely hear it with the radio on

Do not get the injectors since you really do not need them.

The reason why you need injectors with the SAFC by itself is because we run lean in stock form at peak boost but with weak timing. To indirectly advance timing in the low and mid-range with the SAFC, you have to remove fuel, but you can't do that since it's already lean at peak boost. If you add fuel, which is sometimes needed, then the resulting effect is that the ECU lowers timing, and that is no good.

So, you install bigger injectors which introduces a lot more fuel across the board, so you then are able to REMOVE fuel in the low end and mid-range, which gives timing advance everywhere. The downside is you have no direct control over timing and just have to take what it gives you. The more fuel you remove due to injectors, the more the timing gets advanced, and that is NOT a good thing, especially on 91oct.

This guy is getting a flash, therefore he has _0_ need for injectors. Especially for such basic stg1 mods, the injectors are a big waste of money. He could get a set of cams for almost that much...

I do recommend the fuel pump and disagree with CJ in regards to that one aspect.
Yea, I understand the reason behind the injectors for an SAFC tune, but here in SoCal, it is common place to see the injectors/SAFC/flash combo (recently). And it's pretty much common knowledge now that injectors aren't needed for a IX with the mods he has, hence why I assumed he's also installing an SAFC.

I completely agree on the no need for injectors.

thanks for all the replies guys i really appreciate that. i never said i was going to get the safc so i dont know where that started. I can not hear enough good things about scott grey's tune. i was recommended the injectors and fuel pump at rre because i believe they know i wont be stopping after this first stage of mods. soon after i will be getting the cosworth 272's cams/ valvetrain as well as a few other goodies. im assuming i will then need the injectors for sure at that point. if not will i be ok with running the 272's still on the stock injectors and is that recommended?

No, injectors will not be needed then nor any time with the stock turbo. You won't need them until you upgrade the turbo. The % of people with injector upgrades on the stock turbo is extremely low everywhere in the country except in SoCal, and that's because of the SAFC. If not using an SAFC, then they aren't needed.

With cams and most of the bolt ons I am hitting an IDC of around 90%, this is with a stock turbo. It makes cheap insurance and should lower my IDC's to 70% or so. Injectors may not make sense today but they are not a waste. This is also on Sunoco 94 too.

If Scott Gray is doing the tuningthen take his advice. As for teh opinions you get here they are just that opinions. If Scott Gray recoommended it it is for a reason and he definitely knows what he is doing. Some day I will get up to him and have him tune my car.

Regarding the RRE stealth exhaust, I did a test with one just the other week.

My car is a completely stock IX and the other car is a stock IX with the Espelier DP/Rally Cat/RRE Stealth CatBack combo. We started them up independently, rev'd them up, then started them up at the same time and rev'd them up. The ONLY DIFFERENCE was that you could hear the pulses of the engine more with the moded exhaust Evo compared to my unmoded car. The apparent loudness was 100% identical at any distance (from ear to muffler to standing 15 feet away).

Warr,

Is it always the case that when the fuel is removed (leaner mixture) that the ECU will advance the timing like you said in your previous post?

Is this a hard and fast rule for the EVO ECU? I am just asking because I really do not know.

If anyone else can answer this, please do so.

No, not with everything - only with the SAFC, because of the way it manipulates AFRs. What it does is it takes the MAF signal and manipulates it by telling the ECU that a different amount of air is crossing the MAF than actual. The ECU looks at the corresponding timing tables for that calculated load based on the airflow and reacts accordingly. So, when you remove fuel with the SAFC, it tells the ECU that there is less airflow, thus less load, thus more timing. The opposite is true when adding fuel. It's the fatal flaw of the SAFC, which is why it's ok as a completely crude tuning device with no other option, but with EcuFlash, it's a dinosaur.
