Disabling MIVEC ... good idea?

I'll be getting some GSC cams installed on my EVO 9 soon and my local workshop suggested to disable the MIVEC and use two adjustable camgears instead.

Is disabling the MIVEC a good idea? Or should I tell him to just put the single adjustable camgear on the exhaust side and have my ECU (Haltech) adjust the intake side?

insures proper fit, all areas sealed ...... LOL

i will say this, there is a 05 evo down here, same mod list as my ix almost aside from he has ebay 02 and ported and coated manifold, 272 cams running 30 lbs of boost... he is running the ix turbo as well.... we have the same time in the 1/4 and my MPH is slightly faster. So this tells me the mivec is making quite a bit of difference. i'd leave it, leave the adjustable cam gear off, dont really need it from what i have read, go with the mivec...... your tuner probably told you that because he doesnt want to tune the mivec, its a pain in the rear

I thought it was strange when he said to disable the MIVEC, but this is coming from a reputable workshop, which left me confused.

What about on the exhaust side? Should I leave it or put an adjustable camgear on ?

from what i read earlier today on a thread, the adjustable gear on the exhaust side doesn't really do anything for the MIVEC....look around on some of the threads about ix cam numbers i think it is in there....

If you are running a Haltec, what are your other mods?

I think disabling it would be a very bad idea.... I mean, what's the point of having it in the first place? I don't hear of too many people disabling VTEC on Hondas. The point of the MIVEC is to give you a nice fat powerband.

SmokinJoe did two dyno runs with MIVEC on and off. With it off, the turbo spooled up like 500rpms later.

if you are trying to save GAS by making the car "slower" by taking off the MIVEC then you are wrong. (although I could be wrong) this is why.

the at least on my EP3, the VTEC would come in a 2200 rpms. and I though that if I made it keep in at 5300 rpms with a vaccum is 80kpa (meaning only if i am pressing hard on the throttle) I would save gas. Well after a few test i realized that it had to push the car harder to make it go and whatever gas i thought I was saving I would waste - and waste even more - when I tryed to speed up.

so i would leave the MIVEC alone at least for that one reason if they are at all similar systems. - dont flame me, i just for my IX last month I am still learning the ropes of this beast.

I'm not trying to save on GAS, I'm trying to make some sense out of what the workshop told me.

Adjustable cam gears don't serve the same purpose that the MIVEC does. The cam gears are static and affect the cam phase across the whole RPM band, while MIVEC is variable and RPM/load dependent. You should leave the MIVEC alone.
