Hydraulic Lifters..

Just something that I was thinking about.. It's kinda funny that we don't (as far as I know) have the lifter noise that is common with the 4G63... All of the turbo-eclipses that I've owned had this lifter noise.. Also, I read in Japanese Magazine, there was an issue that specialized in the EVO VI.. In that article it advised of the ticking noise to be quite normal as well as our DSM's (which it is!).. But nobody has mentioned it so I am...

Although, one thing that I do hear is the cams spinning like mad when I'm on hard throttle... Maybe I couldn't hear that before in my DSM's cause I always had an exhaust on it..!! Who knows!! Later!!

Hopefully Evo's won't be the next DSM.

Mitsubishi updated the design of the lifters used in the 4G63 (and all their cars) in 2000, I believe. This is the 3rd generation of lifter design since 1990.

I just installed a set of these 3G lifters in my 1997 Eclipse, and all the previous lifter tapping noise is gone.

Basically, the new lifters have a much larger bleed hole on them, so they can bleed air out much better than before.

And, actually, the field service manual for the Evo mentions that if you park on an incline for a while, the oil can drain out of the lifters. It then goes on to say that this will cause a tapping noise at startup. But they also say it should go away quickly once the car has been running.

I know this is a very old post....but I just recently started hearing some noise (like lifters) coming from the engine bay during cold start ups and then goes away after it gets warm. FYI...I have 9K miles on it

Shape - i was told they changed lifter design in 97. When I updated the lifters in my 95 GST, I ordered 97 lifters and everything was gravy!

they updated them around then but the noise was still very present on alot of the cars even with the upated lifters...

I had mine replaced a couple of times....lol and it went away for awhile but always came back..
I just learned to to deal with it..

Kind of embarassing when the chicks could hear this nasty tapping ... what wrong with your car?

Do you think most women really have a clue when it comes to engine noises? please.

The tapping is just caused by the cold oil. It's thick, so it takes a while to get into all the little areas in the engine.

what causes the clicks? is it the cam lobes hitting the lifters because there isnt enough oil in there yet? or is it the lifters themselves that make the noise?
