Rhys Millen Cat-Back Review

Great midrange rumble - not too loud.

Fit perfect - about an hour to install.

Nice gains - strongest up top - about what can be expected from a 3" cat-back (10-15 hp 10-15 ft/lb)

Polished angled out muffler w/ bevel cut tip about same size as stock.

i give it a

laxEVO,

I will soon be buying a cat-back exhaust for my evo. I will not be buying a downpipe or hi flo cat. Why did you buy the RMR exhaust instead of the Buschur or another cat-back? How much did you pay? Thanks in advance for helping me with my decision.

Nice do you have any more pictures maybe a little further back. I am thinking hard on this set up RMR cat back, hi-flow cat and down pipe. Thanks

i thought about the buscher also - but wanted a flanged system instead of a slip-on.

i just have the cat-back - but can easily go turbo-back with any 3" flanged downpipe and high-flow cat. you can mix and match better with flanged system than with a slip-on (in my opinion).

this system also seemed to have the absolute minimum of bends.
similar to the JIC which made 13 wheel hp more than stock.

excellent quality and about 20 lbs lighter.

the stock cat-back exhaust portion is really restrictive - so good gains can be had with most any 3" aftermarket cat-back.

this one is good - would reccomend to anybody.

$599 from RMR.

Great... glad to see you liked it... It was tested to be street legal with the down pipe, so if you do not have one it will be a little quieter then when you get one. Good to see that it only took you 1 hour, that is about what we where aiming for. Have fun

ok just curious if the evo cat back was 599 than why is the lancer axle back $525? seems kinda odd that a whole cat back isn't that much more.

Did you do anything in the way of boost control?? Do you have a boost gauge to compair boost levels before and after?

Some of the sites claim that you loose a couple of psi when you do the catback so you need something to manualy bring the boost back up.

I always thoguht you would pick up a psi or two as well as cut the spoolup time by going to a more open exhaust on a turbo car.

Looks way nice, probably what I'll go with if they ever fix my decel nosie issue.

nice, do you have any audio clips or video clips w/ audio. I'm interested to hear what that exhaust sounds like at idle, reving, and WOT.

laxEVO, take a pic of the exhaust looking down on it from behind the car. I think that's a great angle of it.

Thanks for the write up.

I have a few Q's (RMRblair also please feel free to jump in):
The 10-15hp , torque gain you quote, is this what you measured on a dyno, or are you just quoting the manufacturers claimed gains.

Also, is your Evo otherwise stock ? And are these the gains with an otherwise stock Evo ?

RMRblair:
What's the weight of your cat back system compared to the Std Evo exhaust ?

Was the catback system laxEVO got a system modified after Alfriedsq's experiences or was it as ? If as is, how likely is it that other users would have problems similar to Alfriedsq's ?

the 10-15 whp gain is a reasonable estimate based on what i have seen in the wrx 3" cat-back shootout and the dyno results from the JIC cat-back which is another 3" minimal-bend angled out system which gained 13 whp

believe me you won't need a dyno to notice the difference - it's fairly obvious.

i don't know if it's 12 or 14 but it's significant - sorry but i'm not going to a dyno to verify if my cat-back made 10 or 15 whp.

as far as the weight - like i said about 20 lbs lighter - same as all the ss cat-backs i looked at.

i don't know anything about the other guys fitment issues.

mine fit perfect - sounds good - looks good - makes expected power where you would expect it - THE END.

no boost changes. and yes i have a mechanical boost gauge.

with the stock boost control setup: (ecu monitoring boost control solenoid which controls boost) there will be no changes in boost regardless of what exhaust you have.

if you have an aftermarket boost controller then a good cat-back will cause the boost to RISE because of the decreased backpressure and the resultant easier turbo-spool up. the aftermarket boost controller then needs to be re-adjusted to the desired boost level.

there is no exhaust related reason the stock boost control system would alter the ecu's boost curve.
