fouling out one plug..

Hi I m new here...I just bought a 03 evo.

It has the following mods
Buddy club 264i 272e cams, fuel pump, HKS grounding kit
APS turboback exhaust, with APS hiflow cat
Apexi intake, cusco induction pipe and a hallman MBC.

It was tuned at turbotrixx at 21psi

I changed the plugs a week ago they were denso IW22.
The second cylinder over from the timing belt was all fouled. I put bpr7es in. It ran great for about a week then started to idle rougher and seemed to miss at idle.

So I pulled the plugs again and the same thing the second one is all fouled, and the rest look fine.

Could it be the coil pack, plug wires? Or the tune maybe?

Thanks for any help

Please describe the fouling of the plug. That the plug runs at all should indicate that the coil is alright. It seems like a small head leak or oil/coolant in the combustion chamber. I can't really tell though

Examples:
Black carbon deposits - Oil in the cylinder
Rusty flaky deposits - Coolant in the cylinder

How many miles are on the car and are the wires stock or aftermarket?

The car has 36,000 miles. The plug is all black. The thing is the car runs very strong and does not miss at all pulling to 7,000. Just the idle gets lumpy.

Do you have anybody around that can swap coil packs and wires? The plug is not oily is it?

mitsuorder--The plug does not seem wet with oil, it is covered with like a dry black carbon build up on the whole bottom. It also smells like fuel bad. I do not know anyone that could swap coil packs with me, do you know how much they are new?

If the plug is bad, you would have more notable issues than you are describing. Being that only one plug 'looks' bad, look into possible ring, piston, and valve problems. If it were two plugs, I would say possible coil trouble. Rough idle in an Evo is nothing to worry about.

If I am burning oil, I should be able to smell it right? Or see traces in the exhaust?

When the car is at WOT I do get a puff of black smoke, witch I thought was unburnt fuel, because it is tuned to run rich.

That all sounds normal and yes I think you just running rich. Do yourself a favor and get a leak down test and do it after the car is warmed up. Then injectors, throttle body seal, and go from there.

Is a leak down test the same as a compression test?

Thanks for your help

No, but you might as well get them done at the same time. Leak down test is a more thorough way to determine the health of your engine. 50-100 bucks max. But do all the above.

Leak down test is done only if dry compression test fails, your right - could be leaking fuel injector too, but do compression test first do compression test firstdo compression test first.
