Case Study # 350 - Comparison - IX20G turbo vs GT35R

Similar mods both on pump gas with meth - BR Stage IV for both

20G has reflash

GT35R has AEM

I tuned them both

It was an interesting comparison here

Good comparison, more people should look at this kinda stuff before jumping into a 35r. Nice post.

Just curious why it was only taken to 7200 rpm. As for the power, you can see the 20G running out of steam by 6K. Curious to see the hp drop would be if it was taken to 7800. But the quicker spool and torque of the 20G would get you moving pretty fast.

I have noticed this on an number of Buschur Dyno's too. Dave's RS has a built 2l and of all the dyno's i have seen of that car, even w/ the 35R, he would always take it to 7~7.5k. Same here with Al taking it to ~7200rpm. It seems to me, that the reason these guys don't rev that high, is because I think our cars don't like rpm as much as many people think they do, ESPECIALLY in the long run. Looks like they are looking for the cars to last by keeping the rpm's down, but I could be completely wrong.

The 20g turbo looks like much more fun and useable. The 35R is wait, wait, wait, GO GO GO!!

This just goes to show visually the difference you feel in two totally different set ups. Both set ups are great, it just depends on what you want. Personally for me, the new 20G-LT and alky might be just the perfect combo and this dyno chart shows me the potential in these "small" turbos. Thanks Al.

The question is. How much boost were these things running. If it's low boost then the 35R has an even bigger advantage, and the 20G would just be running out of more steam up top with higher boost.

Al still hasn't stated if this is the 20g-9-5 or the 20g-LT yet

By the much higher torque of the 20g it leads me to think that the 20g was pushing much higher boost than the 35r... Which kind of throws this whole comparison in the garbage except for if one is comparing power band differences....

I was wondering the same EXACT thing. If I had a built 2.0 with ported head, etc, I would without a doubt be revving to 8500rpm at a minimum, especially with a turbo thats spooling at 5000+.

The cars do like RPM, that is not the reason. Maybe Buschur can respond to that. Im pretty sure that Buschur and Curt brown arent shifting their cars at 7500 when they runs 10s.

This is a difficult comparison with as little information Al has provided. Type of fuel and amount of boost sure would be heplful. As someone stated, the 35R loves boost.
