Problem with car...

Last night I had to have my Evo IX (with less than 4000 miles on it) towed to the dealership. The service dept is closed until Monday, so I'm hoping someone here might be able to diagnose what they think is wrong. I'm wondering if it will be covered under warranty or how much it will cost to fix.

I had been driving normal all day for starters, although I do some spirited driving often but no launches. I put it in 2nd gear taking a turn and there was a loud clunk from under the car and then it wouldn't go over 2k rpms or so and the engine/exhaust sounded like crap. I was already in gear and on the gas when I heard the noise. I parked it and was able to still drive but it was sputtering a lot and even stalled out a couple times trying to take off. The service engine soon light was on also. It was dark, but I looked under the car with a flashlight and didn't notice anything obviously broken and didn't see any fluids leaking.

Only mods are a cat-back exhaust, K&N drop in, and a flash.

Intercooler piping popped off maybe? that's what it sounds like. Check all your piping. That's happened a lot before. even on new evos

I've heard that a lot and didn't even think of that last night. I know the UICP was in tact, but I didn't look at the lower piping. Is it the lower piping that people have more problems with? Wouldn't you need to be under a lot of boost for it to pop off? I was driving very calmly when this happened.

Anyone had their intercooler piping come off that displayed the same problem I mentioned?

LICP can pop off too. And no, you don't have to be at high boost for that to happen. Mine has popped off before. I thought my car was destroyed. LOL!! Seriously, check all your piping first because that's exactly what it sounds like that happened to you.

Sounds like you IC piping blew off. The car should barely move if thats the case. The most typical spot is the upper IC near the battery, it forms a 90 bend.

I wish I would've last night... now it's sitting at the dealership. I might go down there and check it out.

Thanks for the response.

I would say it was barely moving. I was able to move it, but I had to go really slow or it would stall out.

Is it that easy to get to if it is the LICP? I'll be trying to find a ride to the dealership if so!

Yea, it's pretty simple I guess. The ***** part is removing the plastic under tray. Yuck. But I don't really know what route you'll have to go to fix it. I really don't know where your ICP popped off at. Mine was the upper.

The lower pipe is a bit tricky to get too. You need to pull a section of the undertry outta the way and then you can get to it pretty easily.
FWIW most of the ones I've seen pop off on a stock set-up is the one on the right hand side of the car, near where the outlet pipe of the turbo feeds into the innercooler.

While your at it you should get yourself a 10mm socket (dont use a flat head, you'll never get them tight enough)and go over all of them to make sure there nice and snug. Mine were pretty loose from the factory.

Which kinda sukked.
