If you have under 1000 miles on the car, give it the full break-in before you evaluate this. The tranny and clutch will continue to losen in the first 5K miles or so ... depending on how hard you drive it. I have 3800 miles and mine and it can still grind in second once in a while when driving hard (at or close to redline). The car simply does not love to power shift ....

The car has 1280 miles carefully broken in ! changed the engine oil at 750 miles ! ! NEVER powershifting ! !always letting the car warm up 8-10 minutes before driving hard ! ! I think I will give it a few hundred more miles and see what happens...again no powershifting.. just quick shift from 1-2 , drove my friends car same way no problems ! !

Could be the clutch needs adjustment... Or the synchro might be bad... Take it back to the dealer now, so you don't keep grinding them... They are very good on these complaint's about the grinding.. My friend's 5th gear synchro went bad and they fixed it without any problems.. Now it's 100% like mine, PERFECT... Mine has NEVER grinded and I shift fast around 7200 sometimes..

Tom,

I had the same trouble. It seemed to have disappeared after 1,500 miles or so. Did you drive Al's car? Maybe I will see you again on Sunday night...

I posted on this already awhile back..

I have the grind at higher RPM's..

Could be that the car needs to be shifted quickly at the RIGHT shift point..?

This "point" could be at 5,000 RPM or ? in first gear..

When I go in for a service, it will be brought up to the advisor.

It's done it a few times now, and I can't be that bad of a driver..

I have been driving standard shift for 18 years.
I have ground the Evo more in 2 months than I have in 12 other cars in the 18 years.

Most times it only grinds once but, the other day it got ugly. After the first grind I pushed harder harder on the clutch and it ground two more times. That was clearly not my fault.

if you have driven another evo, and shifted it with the same speed and style as you shift your own car, and it did not do it, you should have taken your car back to the dealer the same day. what are you waiting for? mitsu would love to see you! im all about the warrantee, i dont know bout yall

Are you pushing the clutch pedal completely to the floor while shifting?

Most people who have complained about the grind found they were not pushing the pedal to the floor.

I talked to a 1995 3000GT VR4 owner last night, and he claimed that HIS transmission did the same thing at high RPM's in a speed shift to second gear scenario..

It could be an inherent trait of the All-Wheel Drive and driveline, specifically the "double syncro" gearbox of the EVO..

I dunno, but I too, have driven a lot of cars in my day(car salesman) and VERY rarely do you find a box as stubborn as the EVO's in a speed shift situation..

I think our hand and shift action is faster than the syncro action is able to compensate for...

They just can't seem to match seamlessly. I guess you have to be a LOT more deliberate when shifting in these gears..

the EVO is my first daily stick-shift vehicle. and i have driven sticks before the evo. so i have little experience and little to reference to, but ill give it a shot.

for me, so far so good. for me, grinding gears (even with hard shifting) is def not a reoccuring thing.. there has been ONE instance that i can remember. the shifter was not fully in third and as i was letting out the clutch (slowly, regular driving) i heard the dreadful noise. but i didnt let it out all the way- hardly in fact- reflexes took over pushed the pedal down as quickly as possible and corrected the problem. my fault

now like i said, i have little experience but i think i'd know grinding. I can shift normally just as good as the next guy. quick, smooth shifts. making sure the clutch is fullly depressed (even though it might not be needed).

there is def an audible noise upon deceleration over 3 grand in pretty much any gear. but that seems to be a common noise. its not really overwhelming so i try and forget about it.

hard shifting. I am still practicing - and i've almost got the AWD hard driving - quickshift completely down. occasionally ill get a small knock from the differential (i read it this is common, and better technique will cure it). but i am getting better by the day. and i have not yet heard any crazy grinds..

other noises... when driving slowly, windows open - gear changing is def audible undernieth the car - thru the dash (it seems). i can hear it when going from first to second, or even placing it in first gear from a stop. again, these are not grinding sounds. just the gears doin their thing.

(fully broken in @ 750 miles plus oil change before any hard driving)

Talking follow up on the grinding into 2nd

Well, yesterday afternoon i decided to change the front diff, tranmission, and rear diff oils over to redline products..and im happy to say that the car shifts better then ever ! ! please note * my car has a little over 1200 miles...I did the engine oil at 700 & I must say that the tranny/diff oils were VERY dirty ! ! black would be the term I would use ! good news is they have magnetic drain plugs...so the point im getting at is, if you plan on keeping your car for a while, do yourself a favor and change the fluids ! ! in the first couple of thousand miles ! !
