What is the correct oil for transfer case ? I got two part codes
I am concerned about lube as I have lost one tfer case due to wrong oil "equivalent" the second tfer case is now whining and it has diaqueen 75w-85 and I am sure it should have been diaqueen 90w - I want to make sure the dealer puts the right stuff in ! its gettin a tad expensive on tfer cases !!!!

Thanks rraulston !!
Thats the info I am after as the dealer supplied the tfer case and diaqueen and less than 1k miles the tfer case is noisy again - car is back at the dealer and they talking about putting castrol something or other in - and I want DIAQUEEN

Diaqueen is NOT a specific oil, its their brand name. If i said to put Castrol in your trans, you would say Castrol what?? 90wt?? 75-85?? Same thing in Diaqueen, Diaqueen 6spd oil, Diaqueen Hypoid LSD 90wt, Diaqueen ATF??? You just cant pull any Diaqueen can off the shelf and put it in.........i think you get my point. Tell them you want to see the can!!!! It ONLY comes in a 1 gallon can!!!
Don't take your local dealer's advise for fluid. The head mechanic at my local Mitsu dealer suggested running diaqueen LSD hypoid gear oil (GL5) in the transaxle, and that's what he's been putting in the Evo's since the first one!
Stuff goes in the diffs not the gearbox

My '06 Evo MR owners manual says, "Mitsubishi Limited Slip Differential Oil (LSD)" for the transfer case. That would be this stuff:

this is what you need..correct part number is 3775610 http://lancershop.com/customer/produ...&cat=15&page=1

i bought some mobil active center diff fluid in cuz mine was running low after all the work n stuff, and i thought it was the wrong stuff
lol
Hey Hylton,
I got a book from castrol on all their oils and lubricants in it. I must pop around some time and show you what I think could work well... Basicly any High quality GL5 oil that exibits a high EP value with no sheer that is designed for diffs will work.. as long as the weight is right.
Mobil 1, castrol, royal purple and Diaqueen are all very good.

Actually the head mechanic is smart. The GL-5 rating is superior to a GL-4 because it has the "EP" extreme pressure additives in it. The transfer case requires a GL-5 and will burn the gears if run with a GL-4 oil. Then you will need a new t-case. the transmission however can be run with the GL-5 and will love you for it. The t-case has hypoid gears in it. Hypoid means that the gear faces have to slide over one another. These types of gears require the extreme pressure lubricants to survive. Any good quality GL-5 oil should work fine in the t-case, tranny, and rear end.
for smart mechanics.
I am not convinced on this lubrication story for these tfer cases
heres my experience
mileage 33k km - did fluid change of all fluids 10 days prior to an event - the Friday night before the event on Sunday - the tfer case whine arrived ! yes I was driving hard, it was raining and I was launching (clutch rev limiter in place and restrictor in line) hard and I was opposite locking around some corners to really enjoy the car and have fun - after probably 8 mins of driving like this - the whine started - I was like you gotta be kidding me ! ! at this stage the tfer case had done about 1400km since the fluid change and this was probably the first time I really got on it since the change - I have driven the car previously much much harder with no ill effects - the oil in tfer case was Castrol GL5 SAE90 so it met the specs in the manual - I had run out of diaqueen 90 - when I got the car I got a steel galloon container of it - in my mind the tfer case failed due to wrong lubrication - why would it last for 33k km and then suddenly 1400km after oil change its fried ? then a brand new one went in with diaqueen 75-85 as supplied by the dealer and literally 1200km from install its also whining - I had turned the boost down and had not launched if anything my driving was damaging the clutch in fear of breaking the tfer case - my immediate thoughts are either wrong lubrication - again - this time from wrong flavour of diaqueen or else my tfer case was bad from the factory - with poor clearances - being two tfer cases down in the same month doesnt sit well with me and with out knowing the cause - I am concerned and I know in my mind I wont rest until diaqueen 90 is in there but the damn dealer doesnt want to put it in !!!! aaarrrgggggghhhhh

As already stated, Your latest t-case likely died because you had the 75-85 diaqueen in it. that oil is a gl4 rating. It did not have the EP "extreme pressure" additive which is mandatory in a t-case. If you could see the design of these gears it would become clear. tranny gears "roll " over eachother. t-case hypoid gears slide on eachother as they roll. The gear faces are subject to much more friction and heat. The EP additive is very important for the ring and pinion to survive. I have seen the damage that occurs. The gear faces are just wearing down. Its not surprising that the gears wear down very quickly with the wrong oil. If the EP additive is not present the sliding forces on the faces of the gears produces excessive heat and friction resulting in rapid wear.
The only thing that goes in the Transfer case and rear diff is the diaqueen lsd Gear Oil that comes in the metal cans.
How hard is that for people to undertand?
The tranny is less specific on the FIVE speed only cars. People have good success with many different fluids. Reline and BG syncroshift being the most popular.
The six shifter cars REQUIRE diaqueen 75w-85 also bought from the dealer.
DON'T DARE TO BE DIFFERENT WHEN IT COMES TO TRANSFER CASE AND REAR DIFFERENTIAL OIL. You will pay. Some VERY CLEVER ENGINEERS designed these components to work only ONE WAY.
