UPDATED: Anybody else need to change rear diff fluid at 5k??

Hey Guys,

Last night I started encountering a problem after about an hour or so drive. Basically when starting in 1st gear and turning the entire car vibrates from the rear, almost like starting out in 2nd gear. Quick searching turned up a few similar threads that pointed to a need to change the rear diff fluid to something a bit better...

So my question is, has anybody else seen this after only 5k? The car isn't launched or really driven hard, so I assume the stupid swings from 60degress to 5 degrees and rain and ice, etc have just broken down the stock crap oil over time...

Any input is great.

can't you take it back to the dealer since it's still under warranty?

Yes... but, knowing that it needs to be driven on the highway a bit for it to happen (atleast now), I am reluctant to give it to someone to beat on when I can have the fluid changed relatively cheap. If that doesn't fix it, I assume it points to a bigger problem and I will concede to the dealer.

Take it to the Mitsubishi dealership if it´s still under warranty. Explain the situation to the service manager, and be present when they test your car. If there is something major wrong with the diff., then it´s best to have it looked at ASAP.

Well, like I said... it only does it after driving for a while on the highway. After I parked and went in and got dinner and everything it was fine right after. I drove an hr home and it was doing it when I got off the highway. This morning I ran all over town running errands with no problem. I feel like when the oil gets all heated up it just breaks down and is too thin.

Could be a quantity issue - could be over/under filled (more likely under) and after some time it starts frothing up.

It's very easy to change... get a jug of Diaqueen and be able to do it yourself (and the center diff). I change mine every 6k miles.

So you recommend changing the fluid in the rear and center diff at the same time?

Update: Decided not to mess around and just booked an appointment with Mitsu... diagnosis, needs a new rear diff. THey have all the parts on order and it's being covered under warranty. They believe it's a factory defect since I don't launch the car ever and generally play nice with it.

Service Managers couldn't give me a reason right now. When I go to get the car I am going to ask for details... maybe they'll know more when they pull it all apart next week and put the new one in.

Sounds like the Ring and Pinion were not aligned correctly, chewed them selves up. Or they didn't put enough diaqueen.
