Gearing change

Since I don't see too many threads about changing our short gears, I figured I would ask everyone when they think a longer set of gears would be productive on the stock turbo with full boltons and meth. Would it even help this car on the highway? Fourth gear is the gear I feel I am the most powerful and it just so happens to be the longest. Has anyone tried this to make your car a better highway runner? If the turbo is too small for this, what sized turbo would be optimal? I would rather have longer gearing than going over redline to get a few mph. I have seen a few threads in the past about the hks 4.11 and was always interested in it due to never having to shift into fifth for a race and the better gas mileage that would probably accompany it. Thanks for any helpful info or opinions.

Bump for an interesting topic. I was actually looking through some other threads on gearing between the evo 8 and 9 and it seems the 8 had longer gears for 3-5.

I was pondering the idea of keeping the gearing of the stock 9 for 1st and 2nd, changing out 3-5th from the 8 and dropping the hks 4.11. It should make for a decent highway cruiser, especially on long commutes.

Thoughts?

I thought Gruppe-S posted in another thread that HKS made a .82 5th gear for use in the IX 5 speed. I'm also looking at the options, since I know I'll be going to 5th before the traps. I prefer to keep the 4.52's for mechanical advantage.

best info you can get http://www.sheptrans.com/index.php

Talk to him personally tell him what you want and he will have an answer.

I am going with a longer 1st, longer 3rd and a shorter 5th

You expect the gear changes to help your car move better at higher speeds or to drag race? I want to know if the cars performance will be enhanced by changing ratios with a stock-ish turbo with all the boltons.

If you have an 05 RS, the gears are different than mine. Since I have an 06, I have a longer 1st, nearly same 2,3 and a shorter 4th and shorter 5th. 06 RS 5speed is nearly identical to 6 speed gears 1-4.

vwjeff, I'm going to take advantage of gearing, so I'm going to try to get a built tranny with closer 4-5. I'm still not sure who sells the .82 5th. That would really help with big turbo and the 4.52's. My calculations show a little help in 5th would keep the engine in power range .

I am fine with 1st gear and 5th. I wouldn't mind having more room in 2nd,3rd, and 4th though. Say instead of doing 60,80, and 110 in those gears i would like closer to 70,95ish, and 125ish at 7000rpms. Is this doable or do i need the hks 4.11 or some other manufacturer gear set like the one posted above?

my car is has been used for drag racing once and never will be again thats way too much abuse for 12 seconds of fun than i can afford. I do how ever race on some local road tracks and auto cross. I never get into 5th gear on these tracks. So i would really like to have a longer 5th gear on my evo 9 so i can drive on the hwy to work with out reving the engine so high.

9sec9, the .82 5th gear is actually not made by HKS, its one of the Japanese options (close ratio transmission). Basically what we learn from this thread is that up to 110 the 6 speed is quicker, between 110-128 the VIII 5 speed is quicker, and afte that it doesnt matter cause you will be shifting anyway but the 6 speed or the JDM RS has the close ratio 5th.
