evo engine troubles!! please help!

I bought an 05 evo 8 back in december and the car is great. As i got used to it i realized that it isnt as fast as it should be. I have a apexi tbe, tubular manifold, intake cone filter, greddy bov (recirc) and turbo xs mbc. All mods were on the car but i changed the boost gauge to an autometer. The car has a smell of gas fumes outside the car after its been driven and the other day i was winding up 4th gear and the motor cut out for a split second and the engine light came on. I thought it was a plug blow out or i hit fuel cut but my boost gauge only hit 16psi so i dont think thats what it was. Me and all my buddys are stumped as to what the prob is but i turned my boost down to be safe. The wierd thing is that when i had the boost turned up my gauge only read 16 to 19 psi but the vaccum line isnt kinked anywhere so i dont think it has to do with the gauge. Im new to the turbo scene so any suggestions are highly appreciated. Im geting dynoed in a week to try and pinpoint my prob. Someone, anyone please help!! lol

One thing i was thinkin but i also dont know much about turbos, could the previous owner have had a bigger turbo and flashed the ecu for it therefore making it push more fuel making it smell like gas and causing fuel cut?? just a thought, im sure its not the case.

Anything is possible when buying a used evo with aftermarket parts in it.
It is very possible to hit fuel cut even at 16 psi with an untuned intake.
Who knows if your gauge is even reading right.

We have to start on what the code it is.

The car has to be tuned if it has all those mods. It would be extremely unlikely that the previous owner bought all those mods and never tuned it.

Anyway, what a huge mistake to just assume you know the code when you say you don't know anything about turbo'd cars and bought a used Evo with mods. You probably hit fuel cut and are seeing the overboost code, but you don't know unless you check. It's a grave mistake not to check and make sure.

Don't get near a dyno until the car is checked over by someone who knows what they're doing.

OKAY, so did you change anything other than the gauge?? sounds like a 1. boost leak, and 2. you hit boost/fuel cut because of the leak. you NEED to check the code in order to see what the prob may be. could be something simple as fixing a lower pipe coupler...

The place thats dynoing my car is a performance shop and is going to check the car over before hand and then get a baseline to see if there is a problem and one thing i noticed is that the upper ic pipe near the rad fan is a lil chewed up but it looks like its just the covering over the rubber thats chewed not the hose itself.

I also dont think its been tuned due to the fact that the launch limiter is stilll 5k and the rev limiter is still 7600 but im not for sure. Is there anyway to find out if it hass been tuned before i pay $$$ on something i already have?? Also the engine code that i got would still be stored in the computer even though i cleard it right? If not then i obviously messed up by clearing it but the car was running exactly the same and everybody i talked to said that it sounded like a misfire code.
One more thing, whrer is a good spot to run the vaccum line for my boost gauge just to make sure its not the line being kinked?? right now its runing in through the A pillar but i hate it there cause it looks like garbage.

yea i bought it from a dealership but i dont have a warranty. The car is running good it just doesnt seem fast really. It doesnt sputter but i dont know why i have a scent of fuel outside the car after its been driven. I know a lil bout evos but not nearly enough to diagnose any major probs so i hope u have a suggestion lol

from what you told the only assumptions are 1. the fuel that you smell indicates that you are running filthy rich, which points to no cat or poked through cat...2. Im positive you dont have a flash and should get at least a base flash from vendors on this forum...3. since you bought the car used and modded, i would check for mods besides the one you listed...such as an upgraded fuel pump...(possible but maybe not)...
--i honestly doubt you have an upgraded turbo and i have seen fuel cut at 16lbs in fourth gear before i got a base flash too so this should be no suprise when you have the car modded...

when u shift at redline does a huge black cloud of smoke come out? if so then your running rich

pointless to put your car on a dyno if your not getting tuned... why do u wanna see how slow your car is?

get ahold of jestr, his tunes are uber cheap and garrenteed to make power.
