Question about the turbocharger on the EVO
I think you are correct about it being a 16g. I believe there are several different versions of the 16g though. Some with titanium some with Inconel. I really want to know if we have ball bearing turbos or not (on the new EVO VIII)? Are some ball bearing and some sleeve type? Somebody out there must know...
a TD05 16G tells you nothing more than its official size and compressor side......ball bearing 16G's are actually not a very common occurance at all.
That being said, it is not a ball bearing unit, but does feature an Inconel compressor wheel (about as good as it gets)

The turbo in the EVO 8 is a Big 16G
. It is not a ball bearing turbo
. They also are not the titanium wheel either. But there are companies out there that are making upgrades. None in the US...............yet
. The Big 16G is capable of low 12's - high 11's, depending on your steup. We will see just how fast the stock turbo will go at the annual DSM shoout-out on July 20th at Norwalk Racetrack-Ohio.

I think we will find out sooner than the shootout.
Buschur is trying to get his car to the track if the weather allows. He feels the car should drop into the 11's with the stock turbo. I'll be at the shootout; I have a grudge match with a friends VR4 Gallant.
Both have 4 doors.

So there may be an available upgrade to a 16g ball bearing turbo soon? I am not really trying to get into the 11's, I just want to reduce the turbo lag. Our EVO's have extremely poor throttle response. Below 3000RPM's they are absolute turds. Maybe the titanium impeller and the ball bearing center section would help spool the turbo faster?

They tend to spool faster and can handle much higher RPM's.

Evo turbo is pretty unique with the twin scroll turbine housing and spinning backwards. There are ball bearing upgrades available from a least one UK source.
