Exclamation 2003 Evo Syncro Grinding?

I just bought an 2003 Evo with 42K milles and today I took the car out and when I try to downshift to second it grinds and is difficult. I try rev matching and double-clutching and to no avail, nothing helps it. I did a search and found that there might be a recall on it, so was wondering it there is then mitubishi will fix it or if there isnt it will still get fixed under the powertrain warranty. Thanks for your help

No recall, just a TSB on synchros. It's for 5th gear and 3rd gear, but it's usually when upshifting, not downshifting. Talk to your local dealer about it, have them pull up the TSB, and see if they'll cover it under the powertrain warranty.

You don't have to have a TSB or recall to get warranty work. Also, when there is a TSB, they will ONLY cover it if your car is still under warranty. Recalls have to be done no matter what, but this isn't a recall.

If going to the dealer does not work out, give Sheptrans a call and tell them your transmission symptoms. This is an older Evo with a lot of miles, so this is normal wear and tear.

i thought that the powertrain warranty should cover it. Why would Mitubishi not cover it? Also, in the worst case, rough estimate, what would be the cost to fix? Thanks

As long as you are in the 5year 50,000miles and not modded the warranty will cover it no problem. If your dealer is cool may be a good time to get them to put in a new clutch while they are at it.

It will depend on if the car was/is modded and if has put warranty restrictions on it. Check with your local dealer if the car still has a warranty. If it does they may take care of it for you. If it doesn't work out, you may want to try getting a hold of Jon @ TRE.

He'll be able to re-build it better than it was stock.

Or do the evo grind mods, front motor mount, stiffer shifter bushings, remove clutch line restrictor, s/s clutch line and the most important change tranny fluid to redline mt-90 royal purple BG2 or equavilent (no pennzoil or GM synchomesh) That worked for me I was having high rpm grinds and difficulty getting into 5th and reverse when I got my used evo.

Question

Called the dealer and they said it is still underwarranty, but i have to give them autorization to open up the tranny, and if they find abuse, that is not covered underwarranty, then i have to pay $1900 plus fluids just to put it back to how it was. And if i want to fix it i pay for parts and labor and other crap which sounds like will end up being $4000.

I called the previous owner and told him the scenior and asked him to be honest with me and it doesnt matter cause i already bought the car, to tell me whether or not he launched the car or powershifted. He swears he didnt. I had the car for less then a week and havent abused it, so what is your guys advice?

I would call mitsu directly, they dont play the games the dealerships do. Or find another dealership that wont make you pay anything. The dealer will find a way to say it was abused I guareentee it! If they are already that leary about the subject. Better go to shepard and pay about $1000.00 and have your trans re-built better and stronger then factory http://www.sheptrans.com/ Here is the price list for a evo rebuild: http://www.sheptrans.com/details.php?sid=11 you can also have other options done. So all in all much cheaper and built better/stronger then the fools at the stealership will do it for! But for the hell of it call Mitsu it would be free if your car is totally mod free.
