does your evo sound like this
I hear yah man, I know a local guy that did not have the noise until 5,000 miles.
Problem is mitsu is calling it normal, and so I have no recourse at all, nor does the dealer or the regional manager.
I still think it is related to the clutch disk springs getting out of whack after a hard launch (not drag racing hard just let me see what this thing can do hard).
I would be willing to bet that the ones that start this early on may be related to the PDI drive they do and an aggresive tech.
Mine had 32 miles on it when I got it. I think some if the guys I have talked too that do not have the noise had zero miles. I would be interesting to correlate that.
More than likely though it's just a bad design of the sprung hub or crappy throwout bearings.
I think everyone will get it at some point in time, just some sooner than others, and some worse than others.
Please PM me when you get yours sorted out and let me know what they find... also if your dealer calls techline they will tell them it is "normal for the car to sound like a coffee grinder on deceleration"
Good luck!

My personal thoughts on the gear whine...Note: the endeavors have the same noise problem with there rear diffs. I thing it is a combo of the clutch line, restrictor valve, t bearing being stuck in partial engagement, and the rear diff. The dealership is on my side. They better be, I have bought around 4 Mitsu 4G63 car's from them over the last 10-12 years. I am waiting for the DM to be in to hear my car. The dealership is pretty confident they will be allowed do a full tear down of the drivetrain. Just to give you an idea of how loud the tranny is: It's so loud that you can hear it over my turbo2tip 3" exhaust w/ off road pipe and the radio fully cranked. If some one stands outside and can hear you gear whine from half a block away it not normal tranny noise.
The dealer is starting to tear down the drivetrain. My mechanic removed the drive shaft to try to eliminate the rear diff from the equation and noticed some fluid from the t/case. He pulled the inspection plate on the t/case and the fluid was like tar w/ metal shavings. He also observed the ring and pinoin was pretty torn up. He said it look like it was not machined correctly, making it mesh together hard... So far it looks like the t/case is being replaced under warrenty...well I'll keep everyone posted tommorow's show: "As the EVO Turns".
DAMN! Not good news. Please keep us in the loop as to what they actually find. If you could please tell us your dealer, so at least I can have my dealer call yours if it is something major they find. My tech wanted to replace the tranny/tc after he listened to it on the oscilloscope, so Im sure if they hear from another dealer the tc is **** they will replace mine.

my question is when they replace the tranny...what are they replacing it with except the same exact tranny...unless a couple of people really have defective tranny's then replacing it prolly won't make a difference...

They swapped mine with another factory unit at 600 miles because they had some issues with the manufacturing process that was leaving shavings in the case before it was assembled.I get your point about not every dealer etc etc and in some cases that is true. But you have no idea how many times I escalated about the decel noise and if you are unfortunate enough to get it (and I hope you don't) like some folks I know who had it show up after 5,000 and 9,000 miles you will understand why I am now leary of ever buying another mitsu product.
The bottom line is the dealers has only so much say so in the matter, and if the manufacturer refuses to admit that there is a problem (as is the case with the decel nosie) you have no recourse with the lemon law and the dealer won' be able to help you even if they want to.
I'm not saying don't buy an evo, just be aware of the car. Ride in one that does have the decel noise and ride in one that does not before you decide you can live with it. Also decide if you can afford to replace the clutch in the first year. Cause if you get one that ends up with the decel noise or a bum clutch, your stuck with it, for now that is.
I hope mitsu will step up in time and find a fix for the decel noise and the clutch/shifting problems (though I think we may have a fix for the shifting in the SS clutch line). If they do, I will be a happy camper, if not I'll never buy another mitsu product.

The dealer I am going through is Burdick Mitsubishi in Liverpool, NY.(315-453-9901). I mentioned before I work for Daimler-Chrysler building there trannys & t/cases, and I honestly think my t/case being replaced is not going to solve the problem. The only reason I think this is because it is an AWD case. It is constantly spinning. The decel noise is more pronounced when my clutch is depressed and the sound is inconsistent between gears. I think they just happened to find the case faulty. I still think it is in the tranny, clutch assembly, or the t/bearing. Well I am going to let the dealership play hit or miss for now. My t/case should be in tommorow.

Well that would not be replacing it, that would be leaving the same one in the car

what i meant is that they will just replace your tranny with the same brand tranny made on the same assembly line as your previous tranny....so i wouldn't be surprised if the noise comes back after a while. now as far as the decel noise goes...i really think it is as big of a deal as some are making of it....noise is noise...i mean the tires on the car vibrate the whole car when coming to a stop...and that is loud as hell also...but it isnt' a big deal....i dunno maybe i am just in denile...and want to think my car is perfect....

My regional rep had a lengthy conversation with engineering in japan about the decel noise after I escallated to the point that the director of customer service called my rep and fored a call with japan to talk about my issue. Engineering stated that they knew about the noise and that it is comming from the back faces of the gears, which are excited under deceleration. They told him the symptoms not he other way around (too prove the point that they knew about it already).
Now, I think what happens is the vibration is setup in the tranny under decel, but either the throwout bearing or the springs on the clutch hub pickup this vibration and amplify it to the point of it being very audible. The throw out bearing in unloaded when the noise occurs, which is always when throwout bearings make noise (assuming it has not started comming apart that is). Applying a slight bit of pressure to the clutch pedal make sthe noise go away because IMO you are taking up the slack on the throwout bearing. My rep thinks it's because you are removeing load from the tranny, but again it only takes the slightest bit of pressure to stop the nosie.
Honda S2000 TSB 00-054 would tend to point to the clutch springs, but my throwout bearing is noisy with the ac on and the car in neutral so...
I should find out more next week.
I believe my car makes the same decel noise...(only has 250
miles)
But it doesn't really do that in 5th (some 80-90mph).. but rather
some 3000-4000rpm at 3rd gear?...
I'm not too worry about it though... Personally, the glovebox
rattle bugs me a bit more...
Last thing I want is Mitsu changing the spec of tranny to fix
the noise and also happen to compromise the performance a bit..
(wild guess)

Sorry for the delay, been busy w/ a house and a shop I just bought. Well I've had the car back for @ 300 miles and the sound levels have not increased (yet). I can still hear the whine w/ the radio down or off. The new t/case is not as quiet as the original.
I have a ??? for some people. Does anyone with this decel noise, have stock exhaust leaving rub marks on the driveshaft? I had a full 3" before I brought it in for service. So don't know if the rub mark was from exhaust or the bad t/case. I only bring this up because my mechanic tried to get a new under warranty but the SM would not let it happen.
