Every Evo I've been in and driven has the decel noise. Its an AWD car and you're hearing the diffs and the Xfer case. My WRX did this too. Its normal for an AWD car. My own car is at least that loud. Absolutely nothing to worry about. If it does it on the accel side, then I'd say you have a problem that needs to be looked into. There is even a Mitsu bulletin on this. My advice, write it off as normal and don't worry about it. Never bothered my WRX one bit, and I know my Evo will be fine too! If you've had an AWD car before, noises like that seem 100% normal.

I hear yah man, I know a local guy that did not have the noise until 5,000 miles.

Problem is mitsu is calling it normal, and so I have no recourse at all, nor does the dealer or the regional manager.

I still think it is related to the clutch disk springs getting out of whack after a hard launch (not drag racing hard just let me see what this thing can do hard).

I would be willing to bet that the ones that start this early on may be related to the PDI drive they do and an aggresive tech.

Mine had 32 miles on it when I got it. I think some if the guys I have talked too that do not have the noise had zero miles. I would be interesting to correlate that.

More than likely though it's just a bad design of the sprung hub or crappy throwout bearings.

I think everyone will get it at some point in time, just some sooner than others, and some worse than others.

Please PM me when you get yours sorted out and let me know what they find... also if your dealer calls techline they will tell them it is "normal for the car to sound like a coffee grinder on deceleration"

Good luck!

The demo I drove w/ 3k on the odo had this noise and it was very loud. This is the coffee grinder noise I have heard people talk about. I chalked it up to the center diff.

My car has done it a couple of times, but I'm still in the break-in period so we're talking about between 3-5k rpms in 1st/2nd/3rd gears. The noise probably goes away when pressing the clutch pedal in because you are removing negative pressure from the x-fer case (i.e. not using engine braking). You have to imagine these x-fer cases are built to withstand some serious power, so they better be beefy and are likely going to make some noise.

If it ever gets loud to the point that I can't stand it anymore, I will take it in. But as of now it's intermittent (only happens after harsh throttle releases above 3k rpms in high-torque gears 1-3). When I got my car it had 8 miles on it btw.

BTW no cars come w/ zero miles, there are always at least 2-3 on it. Typical is 5-10.

Hi All,
Just bought an 03 EVO and have 1300 miles on it. I definitely have the deceleration noise on mine. It sounds to me like the heat shield around the exhaust manifold was loose. I checked all the bolts I could reach easily, hoping it was just a loose radiator bolt, etc., but it is still there. I absolutely love my car but this sound reminds me of sounds I've heard from cheap four bangers in high school.

there is a decell whining noise then there is a TOB noise. The TOB noise should go away when the clutch is pressed in. Try holding the throttle at 3,000 rpms when stopped then press the clutch in and see if it goes away.

Mine just rolled 10k and I've got the noise pretty loud, again 3rd & 4th gears 3-5krpms. I've thought that different gear oil would work, so the Omega oil may be an option. Does it come in different weights, and just in the trans case, or in the diffs as well?

May car developed this issue after 300 miles. Any updates?

I think the issue may be caused by negative load on the clutch disc. You see:
positive load(car going forward): clutch disc springs are compressed/loaded.
negative load(decceleration) - clutch disc springs have no load. if spings have no tension on them while they ride in their carriers, they can rattle around.

In an ideal situation, the clutch springs will be preloaded, even when the disc is subject to a negative load.

Im curious what results ppl with aftermarket clutchs are seeing. Anyone?

I've read 30+ pages on this topic.. my eyes are starting to glaze over... I think its time for a super mega merge.

I just changed out my clutch, PP and TOB and I'm getting the noise for the first time. The tranny was perfectly quiet before the swap (13K mileson the odo).

I switched to Redline Heavy Shockproof.. and left the OEM in the transfer case. I was told the tranny and transfer case fluid mixes.

My best guess is - go back to BG nonsynthetic and see if the noise sticks around.

If so.. I suppose I'll have to take it in to the dealer.

Any ideas?

front diff

Glad to see this thread....I've just finally started driving one (finally got it) and noticed the decel grinding noise in the front diff and recalled having read about it here. I also read somewhere that the front diff was adjusted wrong from the factory on a lot of evos and that if opened and fitted together right (I obviously don't know Jack about the workings of the front diff) it wouldn't break (like some did in drag threads). Anyone know anything about opening the front diff and fitting the gears together better or something like that?

Uh no. You'd have a terrible time turning if you car's front axle were solid. There IS a differential, it's just an open differential meaning that it's possible for one front wheel to be receiving all the torque and the other wheel getting none.

unless you're talking about that ungodly clanking at the beginning of the clip, yeah, mine is noisy too. so what. the entire car is noisy and whiney and generally loud and uncomfortable. and I love it. I hardly ever even turn on my radio, I like the windows cracked so I can hear the turbo and all them noises.

my question: does anyone have ANY reason to think this is a bad noise in any way? it's an AWD car, it's practically a racecar. everyone is saying their's makes the same noise, most AWD cars they've driven make the same noise, mitsubishi is saying it should make the noise, etc... why do you assume your car is broken and that mitsubishi is trying to cover it up?

Tire Pressure

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned this,

On my WRX I had the exact same decel noise (sounds like heat shields vibrating), now that I have an EVO, I have the exact same noise. There was much talk over at the nasioc/subaru forum about running different tire pressure from front to rear.

In the WRX you could almost eliminate the decel noise completely by running about three pounds less tire pressure in the rear compared to the front tires.

I haven't tried it on my EVO, because I'm just not that worried about it and am tired of stressing over crap like this.

Has anyone played around with tire pressure on the EVO to see if things quite down a bit?
