Mods Safe to run Stock ECU
i had intake, mbc, tbe, bov, fmic, u/l icp and no tune. as soon as i put the forge waste gate, works o2, ported 10.5, ported exhaust manifold on my car did not like it. it was running like crap. real bad. i called jestr and well look below. ****y driver and some nice times.
So what mods can you do with a "non-flashed/tuned" ecu? I have tbe, the injen full intercooler piping, and the turbo xs rfl vta bov right now.. and I'm fine. Atleast it seems fine to me.
80210 - you really shouldn't do anything without a tune. I don't know why you would want to make a list like that. It's never a good idea, and any mods that CAN be done are still risky for various reasons. Like an exhaust, for example. If you put a TBE on an otherwise stock Evo, it will have a tendency to overboost in cold weather, which triggers fuel cut. This is a bad thing and can cause an overboost code that eventually puts you in limp mode, not to mention the fact you're running way more boost than you should. Similar points can be made for other mods, too.
Basically anything that doesn't blow up the car constitutes something that 'one can do'. Of course, the potential of those mods (and the money invested therein) will never be realized with the factory tuning, simply because the factory tuning cannot even make the most of the factory equipment.

Hey man.. thanks for the input.. I was just wondering because I'm about to get a new intercooler, the other lower ic pipe, ported manifold, possibly a new intercooler sprayer, and new 02 housing for the turbo.. I was told I need to get it reflashed after these mods... what do you think???
thanks!!
thanks!!

It will run better than it does now, and generally speaking, that can be interpreted as 'safer', 'tuned', and/or 'more efficient'. If retuning the ECU caused a pattern of issues, no one would bother, and upgrading these cars would be much less gratifying.
That's one option, but we have a local flash tuner, so send me a PM and/or head to RMEVO.com. You are in CO, right? You can get a custom flash locally for less than half of a v380 mail-in. We just had our first annual RMEVO meet and had 30 Evos show up. Did you miss out? Our new local tuner was there flashing left and right.

I don't know what the fuss is? When I sent my piggyback in for an update, I ran around on a stock unflashed ECU for a couple months with the following mods:
280 cams(+2/0)
upgraded FMIC
K&N drop-in
3" TBE
255 WALBRO
S.S.A.C. O2
ported 10.5
AMS L.I.C.P.
DejonTool MBC
I just turned boost down to 17.5#. I think that I ran it daily for two months. No long-term ill effects. I did it out of necessity, since I live outside the U.S. I wouldn't endorse this practice otherwise though. By all means get it flashed for any major mods. The car ran uber-rich, and was very detonation prone, with much higher EGT's and the crappiest fuel economy.

Yeah I've heard lots of different things... I'm not sure what to do. Save up my money buy all my mods in one day and then send in the tune so my car is only out of commission for a week?
Keep the inputs or experiences coming, I'd love to hear more.
