Question Install a Passport 8500 yet?

Can anyone give me instructions on how to hardwire my Passport 8500 Radar Detector? I would probably keep it low and center on the windshield.

I have a 10" Window tint strip band on the windshield (5%). Will the radar detector be able to function properly looking through such a dark window tint?

If anyone can help me out I would really appreciate it!!!

Tom

I tried using a phone jack connector and a modem cord to get extra length to install it and it didn't work.....

I just got finished installing the hard wired smartcord and I placed the remote control in the instrument panel right under the unused round "gauge" where it says Lancer.
The wire is routed so it comes out right by the rearview mirror and the Passport fits right above the mirror or right beside it. Looks very stealth and fits well. I don't think however that the laser detector will work quite as well 'cause the cops aim at the headlights and thebeam is pretty narrow....
It looks really nice and I think it works very well (except my doubts about the laser) The smartcord I got diect from Passport and I think it was not too much.... I'll see about posting some pictures soon

Oh, I just re-read your post.... That window tint migth be a problem, You better keep it low over the dashboard....

Getting a smart cord for Escort is the way to go. I went that route and mounted it low on the windshield. Works great and I've picked up laser with it still (I think the cop was goin nuts with it though.) I flush mounted the remote sideways (Vertically) to the left of the center vents.

Eventually I too will have pictures, but am really interested in seeing how the remote looks in the instrument cluster.

Aftermarket tint should no pose a problem. However, stock tinting would be more prone with interfering with detection.

Why would this be? I thought that any metalized tint would adversely affect the detectors function. Aren't some windshield tints metalized?

I think I might have mislead you... I actually located the remote in the lower right hand corner of the dash, outside of the instrument panel... I'm going to try to post some pictures, although I've never been able to do it before....

Metallic tint DOES block radar and will hinder performance of your detector. I have a Valentine one with limo tint all the way around. I've noticed you get some falsing with the tint but, it is easy to identify thats it is a false alarm. Overall, performance isn't afftected enough for me to take off the tint, because the V1 works so great to begin with

Maybe a better close up of the Passport mounted over the rearview mirror.... The wiring is completely hidden, comes out of the windshield trim just above the mirror...

The alpine installed in the relocated placement. The existing hole will be filled with a CF, angled, gauge mounting panel. It's looking good and will hold (2) 52mm gauges... Everything stays stock, no cutting or modifying the trim panels
