how hard is it to change syncros

well i recentely devoloped the 5th gears grind.
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=255828

i was just wondering how hard it would be to change the syncros my self and what are all the parts i would need to buy and how much the parts would cost.
i havent really worked on the evo much because i only has it for a few months. but i owned turbo hondas before and i have done quite a few engine swaps and have built 2 b seris engines myself with success. but i have never opened or worked on a tranmission before. i know i will have no problem pulling the trannie off. but can i just buy parts and do this myself or should i be better off sening it to shep. i do have the 4 book service manual for the car.

are there any write ups for this??

i would say send it to shep not only after removing the tranny you have to open it up its not just remove the bunch of 14mm bolts that hold the transmission toghther then you have the shifter linkage and certain c clips or detent ***** that will hold it to toghter if not. internally on a trans rebuild it can become very tedious and a pain in the nec even after experiance this can cause problems. things like shifter forks must be alighned correctly and shims in the right spots you want be able to shift and ifyou cant read the gear by looking at them and or a manual u might have some problems.

Different size/type of gear pullers
Hydraulic press
Brass hammer
Vise that's bolted to a bench

These are just some things you need to do the job.
If you have no background or idea on re-building trans', Id suggest have the experts do it for you.

It's not rocket science. Follow the manual and you will be fine. You def. need a press though.

That press would work although unless you have done a Mitsu trans before I would leave it to the pros at TRE or Shep.

I was under the impression that the box is Getrag and hence hard to get parts for. Shep and TRE probably have specific suppliers that don't sell to the general public -- that or they have developed the parts themselves.

Perhaps Ebay?

I say go for it, the worst that is gonna happen is you're gonna have to shell out for a used trans, which can be had for about the price you'd pay shep. With such a limited amount of people who build transmissions, do a serious write up with as many pictures as you can, and that will help the rest of us.

i say give it a shot, if you mechanically incline enough to rebuilt motors, then you should be able to figure a way. if you don't feel comfortable doing it after you have it apart, then box it up and ship it to Shep. i rebuilt my first honda tranny without any prior experience and had no problems. just use a good service manual and follow it carefully. goodluck, and don't forget do to a write-up.

I would leave this one to a pro. There are unlimited headaches this could cause!
