Transfer Case Blown :(

Well i have been hearing some high pitch wining coming from my car that gets louder the faster i go. so today i took my car to KevinD's house for him to look at. we went for a drive and he knew right away as to my problem. my transfer case was on its way out. we changed the fluid about 800 miles ago when i did my clutch and today when we drained it out it was black as oil. so i guess now its going to have to be rebuilt or find a used one from a junk yard. im thinking i will send it to shep and have him rebuild the transfer case along with beef up the tranny. guess i wont make it to the auto-x event this weekend

yea, best bet is to pull it out and send it to shep asap i think you can hurt the ring and pinion, if you were to keep driving it! what diff are you going to upgrade too?

I feel your pain. Mine was more of a catastrophic failure though. Stripped the splines between the Transfer case and tranny. I had my tranny rebuilt by Sheppard and had to completely replace my transfer case because the ring gear was cracked . I put the Mitsu LSD back in and they beefed up the transfer case too. It cost $4400 total, because I had to buy a completely new transfer case. I think the tranny rebuild is about $1800. Mine was a bit more expensive because they had to rebuild my center differential too (center diff sits in your tranny while the limited slip portion sits in the transfer case). It takes a good month or so for turnaround.

so what? mitsu doesn't sell the ring/pinion seperate? that's kinda ridiculous if they don't, that seems to be one of the main issues when one breaks.

whining? I have some whine coming from somewhere, but doesnt seem to get louder as I drive, just at low rpm. So that means the t-case is probably on its way out? hmmmm no more launches for me, should have had it repaired when I put the twin disc in... crap I hate taking the t case out. Can anyone confirm if some noise is normal?

if your ring and pinion goes bad, you'll have to buy a new t-case or a rebuilt one. there are no replacement parts. it sucks. i don't know how the evo has been around for so long and there are no after market ring and pinion gears.

Is your evo an 03-04? Those seem to be the years where the xfer case goes most often.
