Silkolene?

Curious if anyone is using Silkolene syn 5 gear oil in their trans? I haven't been able to obtain BGII in the UK and it can't be mailed via USPS. I figured this stuff has a very good rep here. Anyway check it out:

http://www.performance-oils.co.uk/acatalog/Gear.html

Silktran Syn 5 Gear Oil
A fully synthetic gear oil lubricant for manual transmissions and final drive units in high performance vehicles. Operates over a wide temperature range. Gives true "stay in grade" performance. Enables optimum power release; even at low temperatures. API; GL4/5; SAE 75w/90

My 8k mile 2005 VIII GSR has the infamous 5th gear grind and I want to give a fluid change a try between now and when Mitsu USA gets their hands on my car in Oct.

i dont know about their gear oil but formula 1 cars use their motor oil. VERY expensive stuff. My friend also runs it in his gt3 944 turbo race car.

I thought the transmission took only GL-4, and GL-5 was not recommended for transmissions, although it was OK for transfer cases and rear diffs. Is that wrong?

You have to look at what the product description on their website. It says its ok for both, hence the GL4/5 rating.

I just changed the fluid. I was pretty surprised by the amount of metal on my drain plug. Even more so when you consider I only have 8,000 miles!!!

Also, changing the fluid on Evo's suck compaired to my old WRX. I am gonna have to buy a fluid pump. That would make it much easier.

Shifting: I only drove the car from the hobby shop to my house (1/2 mile) but even cold it shifts better than the stock stuff. I'll update once I actually get the car up to speed.

GL-5 fluid will attack brass parts. It may meet the fluid specs, but is contraindicated if it is a GL-5. Mitsubishi specs a GL-4 and is VERY specific that it is Diaqueen or an identical product.

Well I have been running with the Silkolene for about a week now. First off, why couldn't mitsu add a dipstick like Subaru??? What a PITA, I really need a fluid transfer pump!
Cold shifting still sucks. I don't get a grind but the shift is very notchy.
Warm shifting GREATLY improved. It seems to get better the longer the Silkolene is in.
The BIG one.... 5th gear grinds hardly at all now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
