Help with Manifold Studs

Help with Manifold Studs

Ok, I've searched everywhere and I must be retarded cause I cannot find anything on this.

I'm installing an exhaust manifold, 10.5 hotside, 02 housing, and manifold studs this weekend. How do I replace the manifold studs? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Where can I get an 02 remover tool and PB Blaster to soak everything the day before?

Also, I have air-tools. Will this help or hurt the install due to the bolts striping out all the time for most people?

Again, any help would be great. Thanks.

take two nuts and tighten them together on the stud and then just back the stud out...they may not come out, sometimes they are a royal pita...i have 4 brand new studs for sale if you end up needing one...

So, put two nuts on one stud and tighten. Then what? I'm lost here.

then just lefty loosey righty tighty the stud out ...you use two nuts so that when you put a wrench on the nut and twist it will move the stud out of the turbo...

You put two nuts in one stud and eventually the one nut inside will lock up with the outer one. You will then be able to turn the stud until it comes out.

here's another tip - use the air tools to take everything apart but DO NOT use them to put it back together. Try and use all new stainless hardware too if possible. finger tighten everything then torque it down to specs, dont force anything cause you dont want to stirp the bolts or studs during the install

you can pick up an o2 sensor socket at any reputable parts store. they are about $12.00.

liquid wrench is another penatrant that works well if you cant find PB blaster.

airtools will help with the removal. especially the exhaust mani to turbo. be careful though, you could snap a bolt-trust me on this. it almost cost me $249.99 for the one friggin bolt that snapped.(that is the replacement cost for a new 10.5 housing). make sure you DONT use any antiseize on the bolts going from the exhaust mani to turbo. that is what happened when the bolt snapped. the anti seize crystallized and caused it to break. just use some moly lube when you reinstall those bolts. run a tap throught the bolt holes also. it will remove any burrs that may be inside the threads.

This is getting easier the more poeple post. Yes, i will use the air tools to take everything apart and use regualar wrenches to put everything back together with the right torque specs. Thanks again everyone for replying.

Ok, I'm putting all new parts in. Exhaust Manifold, 10.5 Hotside, and 02 Housing. Can I re-use the bolts or should I get new SS ones? I have the new one's that go on the 02 housing where in meets up on the bottom of the 10.5 hotside, but I'll have to re-use the bolts for the manifold to the hotside. If I should replace those, where do I get the new ones?

I bought all my replacement hardware from Advanced Auto Parts but Im sure any auto parts store carries the same hardware. Just make sure you get the right size M12 x 1.5 30mm if I remember right for the mani-to-hotside bolts

You wont need them IMO unless they're bad already. I popped my manifold off without any problems. I assume you're thinking you're going to break the studs pulling mani.

All I did to pull the mani without damaging it was hit it with some WD-40, let it soak for a while, then get wrench on their and tap the top of the wrench with a hammer counter clockwise.....don't go all crazy with the hammer, just keep tapping at it and it will come loose.

make sure to tape some cardboard over your radiator btw.

cardboard over the radiator is an excellent tip!!! So basically to get the stock mani off, you have to take off the mani to turbo studs??
