I picked up a HX40 today and was just going to re-sell it but after thinking about it I may throw it on the evo. 70lbs a min and full boost 4000-4500. Glad someone has put one on the evo before.

I dont know if joeracer321 still posts on here but I am trying to figure out why he used the dsm bullseye housing, and what manifold he used with it. I was thinking just using an oem holset housing, I believe mine has the 16cm but from what I have read the hx35 12cm is interchangeable and spools decent for smaller motors. So I could aquire that housing for next to nothing and with any t3 manifold throw it on. Im thinking a manifold mounted tial 38, 850s and some tuning with ecuflash I can have a 500whp evo for less than $500.

Im still trying to gather more info before I decide to throw it on.

its a more common tubro for dsms, unless you just drag race your car there is no purpose for one, it spools real slow and you can get teh same power out of a 35r with better spool.

looking at that dyno graph, hes not hitting 20 psi till over 5500 rpm. sense hes not at peak torque until over 6000 rpm. that is terribly slow for only 500ish hp. i would want to see logs on the street of the boost in 3rd gear. on a dyno you can load it up and have it spool far faster then you would ever be able to on the street....

The reason this turbo spools slow for some people is because they use the huge diesel monstrosity turbine housings on the 2.0L. I used a .55 BEP housing which limited its true top end flow potential but it light off like a rocket on the bottom end. The turbine inducer is actually a bit smaller than a garrett stage 5 (p-trim), but due to design differences actually flows more from what I was told. Unfortunately I don't have any logs or dyno's because after I took the turbo off with the wastegate issue, I switched over to the BW S366 with a 44mm tial. I have been using this combo with the .55 dsm housing but I will be finally parting ways with the dsm style housing; I now have a .70 A/R T3 inlet V-band out housing by BEP. It is a really nice product, and I should see much better top end over the current .55 which I feel is limiting the combination.

I'm pretty sure holset designs ALL their turbos for truck and 18 wheeler use.

How were you using the dsm style turbine housing? Did you have a custom manifold made, also a custom 02 housing? I have a 3065 on my turbo mirage which is a manifold away from being able to throw it on the evo as well

Although the turbo is manufactured for diesel 7-10litre application it is quite capable of working on a high revving 2.0l. For the 4hr or so I have been reading about them I have found several 500+hp 4cyl and everyone is claiming 25psi between 4-4500. I dont even floor my car below 4k rpm anymore and when at the track the lowest rpm I am at is 5750 on the 2step. I dont autoX although I would like to, just cant afford it. Occasionally I take a turn aggressively on the street and I beleieve the turbo is responsive enough for me to still have fun with this. The reason I am not going 35r is money. I want to go fp20g but even used they sell for $1200. I have the capability to get stuff fabricated relatively cheap (intake piping, downpipe) so I think I could have this turbo on my car making 500hp for well below $500.

An HX35/40 would be a better fit, but still have worse response than a 35R. The hotsides on those turbos tend to be way too big for a 2.0L setup...but there are smaller housings out there.

Everytime Ive compared spool up from a dyno to real life street driving the dyno made my car spool slower.. What do you guys think?

I feel that the stock divided large turbine housings that the Holsets use are best used with twin scroll exh manifolds or headers. I'm sure that with the 16^cm2(.77or .80A/R) or 14^cm2(.67 or 70A/R) twin scroll housings, these Holsets will spool up much faster and better than the .70A/R open T3 flange turbine hsing and have some tremendous top end on top of that. I feel that the divided twin scroll 16^ cm2 or even the 18^cm2 (.87or 90A/R) housing would be the ticket for the HX40 with a twin scroll mani.

They use them and alot of European vehicles use them. It's a popular turbo in europe for guys who mod their cars, VW,Volvo,BMW,MB etc. Even the Honda and Ford guys are using these turbo's like krazee.

Go for the HX25 or HY35 instead. It'll be much more suited for the 2.0L.

I actually have a Holset HX-35 turbo on my 03 evo. My mods are a COMPLETELY STOCK MOTOR (no cams, alky inj, nos, etc...) 1st is laggy... start to spool around 5800 with a Rev Hard ported manifold with a t3 flange, If i do 3rd gear pull full boost is achieved at around 4500 and pulls like a train till redline on 18lbs. I got tuned on 18 lbs (stock clutch). i made 342 whp and 322 lbft. which i was fairly satisfied since my WHOLE setup cost under 1500 buxs w/ a tune!

Which turbine hsing r you using? That and the mani you are using have a lot to due with your slow spoolup.
