Swaping 9.8 to 10.5 hot side, help/sugestions needed
Like the title says, I'm in the process of the installation of the 10.5 and some other goodies before I get tunned at the end of April. So far deinstallation of parts is going well, no major cuts on the hands, most of the parts came out with either little or no hassle, until I got to the hot side. Biggest worry was not to snap any of the bolts and this operation was successfull as well. The only problem I'm running into is the separation of the hot side. The turbocharger is still in the car held by the return oil line and one of the water lines (the one in the back closer to the engine block.) The oil supply plumbing is disconnected at the engine side and water is disconnected at the turbocharger. Also all bolts are loose at the exhaust manifold and I'm able to slide it loose from there. The goldish looking clamp holding both sides of the turbo is out as well. Question is, how do I separate hot side from the turbo itself, it is preaty snug?? This thing has almost 30K on its clock. Should I spray some of that stuff that I used for loosing up the hotside bolts and tap on it gently until it lets go or is there any other good efficient method??
One more thing, is the gasket between hot side and exhaust manifold the same size for the 10.5 as it is for the 9.8?? I forgot to measure and I don't have the access to the car for the next 2 weeks.

Have you already removed the O2 housing, or is it still connected to the hotside? I think that when I did it on my car, I wedged a tiny thin flathead screw driver in between the HS and the center housing, or put the circumferential clamp back onto the turbo and tighten it but not fully tight, just so that it keeps the housing from separating completely and whap the housing with a nylon mallet.. In the end, if it is too much of a bugger, then take the turbo out as a unit and separate the housing on your workbench.
You do NOT have to remove the turbo from the engine to get the hotside off. You can try to pry it with a flat head but I couldn't this to work.
GENTLY tap the hotside with a hammer and it will bust loose I promise. You won't cause any damage as long as you don't ham fist it. Also, be sure to support the hotside from below (hold it up with your left hand and tap with your right). You don't want the hotside to scrape or fall on the turbine blades. If you don't feel comfortable you can remove the whole unit and try this (or a different process ) on a work bench. I've successfully done this 3 times.

sparky, my downpipe is a one pice that has the O2 built in into the pipe. Anyway, the whole thing is out. Only turbo left in there.
Can I use the regular hammer to tap it out, or mallet is a better tool for this job??

Yeah, you can gently tap on it with a rubber mallet or a regular hammer. As mentioned above, it's best to have someone else hold the hotside while you tap it gently, as it's heavy and once it slides abruptly away from the center housing it will fall onto the turbine blades if not secured and supported. So, an extra set of hands is required.
+1 to sparky.. take care in banging the hotside off.. I learned the hard way and bent a fin.. be sure to securely hold that bugger and tap it.. the hotside will lodge loose.. you DO NOT have to take the whole turbo out.. but definitely take off your O2 with whatever is attached to it, as you said you have on it already.. anyway, good luck..

Yeah man just do the tapping with the hammer. I didnt see anyone respond to your Gasket question.. Yeah their the same but while you have it all out make sure the gasket doesnt overlap anywhere. If it does shave that part down. I have seen this on a few cars i have done. If you really wana get down to it find someone that has the right tools and go ahead and port match too. Good luck finishing man.
