motor toast, help please
Hello Everyone, I have a problem that i'm hoping someone here can give me some ideas on.
I have a 2003 stock evo 8, i have recently spun a rod bearing on the #3 cylinder while on the track at laguna seca. I'm having the car shipped to my house and the motor is being shipped to road race engineering for a rebuild. There feeling is the short block should be rebuilt. Of course since i have to get it done i'm going to have them do a 2.3. The link below takes you to some shots of the motor showing the damage.

My problem is this, this car was only meant for occasional track use but mostly for a daily driver. I'm not really excited about spending about $7,500 on a new motor for it, 2.3 or not. I don't have the skills or time to do it myself, so that option isn't available to me.
The motor has 47k on it. A machine shop in monterey went through it already and said the crank was slightly bent also. I have thought about just getting a new factory short block but by the time it is finished it works out to about the same money. I have thought of a used JDM motor or even one from a wrecked evo but those are in the 4 to 5k range and for that much i would rather get the rebuild so i'm sure it is fixed properly.
I would like to know if there are other options that i haven't thought of yet.
Any insight would be great.
Thanks everyone.

how'd you come up with the figure of 7500?
stroker kit:2300
removal/reinstallation of engine: 1000
work on the block: 1000
retune: 300-400
~4700....unless i am forgetting something, which is entirely possible...
nevertheless, good luck with the build!

Contact "94awdcoupe" he deals alot in wrecked EVO's and what not and always has a motor around for sale on here, my buddy bought a motor from him just recently for a great price! Also not to mention he knows alot about EVO's and is a great guy to do business with. just my 2 cents

about 6k of that came from road race, that covers parts and labor plus the money i have already spent to get the car back down here from the shop up in monterey that pulled the motor then found they weren't able to fix it. That is another story that i would rather not discuss here.
Here is the estimate i got from road race, this doesn't include the crank which i will need for the 2.3.

im very happy with the work. they put eveything back together nicely. couldnt even tell the motor was removed. So much torque. I have only been running wastegate boost since october 11psi. the car is almost ready for a tune waiting for evo green.
I didnt see oil cooler or clutch on that quote. might as well get the clutch done now

RRE did the clutch back in july of last year. The funny thing is the shop that pulled the motor in monterey felt i needed it replaced.
You have dropped the boost with the stroker kit, i think stock they are running 19psi. Honestly i would love a stroker, i may just have to get it done.

I went through the same thing so I feel your pain
I weighed all my options and the route that made the most sense was to get a built short block (2.3 from buschur). I also had them clean up my head and did new springs/retainers/valves. I would make a list of all your options and compare them - My advice is not cutting any corners and make sure its done right - Give Buschur a call!
RRE is a great option for him. He lives close RRE is problaby the most underrated evo company around because they dont advertise as much as ams and bushur.
After shipping the BR block and sending them your core it is going to cost well over the RRE quote.
You will not be disappointed with RRE, mike and robert (the robert that builds the motors) are great and will take care of you
Since the car hasnt been tuned I left the boost at 11psi. I want to be safe
