Thumbs down My turbo died..need help

Yea so picked my car up from the shop yesterday, because it needed some things done. About 1/2 way home i got on it a bit and it felt not nearly as fast as it should. I felt like i was going no where. Then whenever i would accelarate it would let out a whine and then the boost would kick in a bit and the whine would stop. I got on it again and it was like driving a civic...slow. The whining/screaming sound kept growing worse and worse. Then 5th gear lost all accelaration, then 4th gear lost all accelaration. I would put the pedal to the floor and nothing would happen. By the time i got home the whining sound was horrible and the car wasnt going higher then -3psi. It was only vacuuming and not boosting. I took the car apart to play with the turbo and see if it was it. The turbine blade still spun fine but i could move it back and fourth a little more than a millimeter which i no should not happen and is a key sign to a turbo being shot. What do you guys think and if it is the turbo....should i get another evo8 turbo, evo9 turbo, or what should i do thats reasonable. I would love to get a huge turbo but i would then have to pretty much rebuild my engine to handle the power.

is it a "sputter" or a whine?

Could be bad plug wires or spark plugs

Check your intercooler piping connections. 1mm of shaft play isnt extreme. Did you notice any chunks taken out of the blades of the turbo?

I pray that that wine isn't your tcase!

Did you have any signs of your turbo going bad before this? Such as, not hiiting full boost until higher rpms. . . Or anything?

Because normally a turbo just doesn't all of a sudden go. . It normally has signs of going out

Is your car idling funny?? Could just be an intercooler pipe that blew off. . .

I checked the ic piping and it looked fine...i didnt have enough light last night to see if any chunks were out of the turbine blade....boost seemed fine before...i was in italy for the past week and half and had clutch problems before that so i really havent pushed my car in 3 weeks. I really didnt notice anything before that, regardless that i didnt push it at all because of the clutch needing to be readjusted. Yesterday it was idling pretty low. I have a turboXS tune and reflash so it usually idles right at 1k but yesterday it was at around 7-8k and would fluctuate.

If your idle is fluctuating that means there is a leak somewhere. Check that piping with a boost leak test. Your turbo is fine. When there is a big boost leak you wont even be able to boost 1 psi.

If your getting a low idle, and boost problem. . I'd be willing to bet either your uicp popped off of the throttle body (maybe it didnt come off completly) or your lower intercooler pipe came off.

What about that horrible whining noise that makes you sick to your stomach knowing something is wrong? Could a leak produce that kind of noise?

I would think it is pressurized air escaping the intercooler piping mixed with partial turbo spool.

I would also go and make sure that your compressor wheel looks ok.

+1 on boost leak test. Especially if you experienced a loss of boost AFTER getting on the car... Sometimes just eyeballing the IC piping doesn't cut it.

Also, what did you recently have done at the shop. If you recently had an LICP installed, that would be the second place I'd look (the first always being the UICP - throttle body connection).

Good luck!

Ive had the rmr icp on for like 2 years. The uicp was fine..i took it off and put it back on. I didnt get a chance to check the licp though so that could be a possibility. At the shop i had my clutch bled and readjusted, compression and leak down test done. That was it.

So based on everything..whining, no boost, turbo not spooling, little more than 1mm shaft play...you think my turbo is fine and its just a leak/icp?

I would say so. Like I said, check to make sure there is no damage to the compressor wheel.
