If the transmission grinds going into third gear with the car stopped at idle and while your driving in third gear as well only while driving. Thats sounds like a bad syncro and then some.

From the sound of things there is internal transmission damage. Until the transmission is out of the car and pulled apart there is really no way to know just how bad the damage is.

The "good" news is that if your only problem is grinding when shifting into 3rd, it's possible that only the 3rd gear syncro is shot. However don't be too surprised if the rebuilder suggests changing out a few other parts when he inspects the internals. If one syncro is on the way out then one or more of the others may be worn as well. And plan on replacing your clutch while the transmission is out unless it's almost new.

Expect to spend some money on the fix - there is a fair amount of time and effort involved in dropping the tranny out of an Evo.
