Slipping clutch Q

Just tonight it felt like my clutch starting to slip while trying to do some logs. I was just crusing in 5th and dropped it to 3rd and did a pull and it revved up like it was slipping, but then it was a hard engagement like i was launching the car, but while driving. It also didnt happen that often like it did when the clutch was going out with my old 240sx. I can take off from 1st (no launching. i have never launched my car as i have 50k on the stock clutch and wanted it to last until i had the money to get a new clutch) and go WOT and no slipping. I even went to 2nd, 3rd, and 4th WOT with no slipping problems. It only seemed to happen when in 5th and drop it into 3rd. It also only happened 3 times, but it does have me worried. I was thinking maybe i was actually losing traction (it was 35 degrees tonight). Any thoughts guys and gals?

I think most will agree that if you have 50k on the stock clutch and you are experiencing what feels like slipping, then you are probably slipping.

Start planning now, if you don't want to spend much, an ACT Heavy Duty Street would be perfect.

50k on a stock clutch is impressive. I would definitely get ready to fork over some cash for an ACT.

my evo had a similar problem like yours but the only diffrent mine did it when i was in third and getting on it from a 2500 rpm all the way to red line and it felt like it started to slip at 5000rpm to about 5700rpm, then it will hook again, but it only did it maybe twice or 3 times. my evo is a ix with 3k on it and i have never launched the car, so i am almost sure its not the clutch, but in your case ill have to agree with every1 here man u got 50k on stock clutch, its about time for new1.
good luck

Whats a good average for the labor for a clutch install? Ive been told around 500. Im defiently not going to the dealership around here, so it will be an independent shop.

the guy i know charges 600 for twin plate clutch installs, i dont know if single plate would be cheaper, but yeah 50k out of the stock clutch is great, be happy it lasted that long

Thanks. I wish it would have lasted a bit longer though . I contacted the only local "performance car shop" in the Reno area and he wanted 995 !!! Then speedelement is only charging around 600, so i think it'd be worth it just to drive out there and get it done.

Something to keep in mind on the EVO is that once the clutch starts to slip when it didn't before, it will degrade very rapidly to where you can't drive the car any longer so have your pennies saved up and parts on hand. It goes from bad to worse very quickly because there are stops built into the pressure plate that will prevent further travel (clamping) beyond a certain amount of wear, unlike most pressure plates that simply slowly go out of their normal working range. If it is starting to slip, it is probably because the disc is worn enough that the pressure plate is just touching the stops. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Not a problem and thanks for the input! Getting the car fixed in the next week or 2 with one of your ACT clutches!
