from what I can tell it looks like the shaft sheared right as it enters the wheel house.

I didn't hear a thing, but I was driving 8/10 on a road course at the time

Done that once. I drove a 91 GSX with the waste gate solenoid hose unplugged(by accident) . Launched in first on a traffic light, accelerated very hard(felt good ) but then a loud kabom sound left me with instant lack of power.

Removed the turbo and the turbine wheel was completely gone, no shaft(it was snapped), just little pieces of blades remained and a dented /scratched turbine housing. Fixed the issue by replacing the td05-14b with a Evo III.

Oops. Looks like your turbine wheel went AWOL from the housing.

Is there a driving style I should avoid so it doesn't happen again?
Or is it the luck of the draw?

how many miles on the turbo and how much boost at the time? High boost and high miles? It was probably just time.
