Short Block = Block (Usually with internals)

Long Block = Block + Head (usably with internals)

EDIT: Did a google search for short block and here is what i got from Wiki.

Ohh so its just pretty much a rebuild of your motor. Can be stock or you can go all out what ever your choice being. And if i you go long block its a full top and bottom rebuild. I see, i see. But why not just say bottom end rebuild, etc ?

It's not necessarily a rebuild. Your engine's bottom end as it sits right now is a short block and the whole thing is a long block. You can order a factory short block from Mitsubishi. Same thing you have in the car right now.

Hope this helps.

People use the term short block when they are refering to a block with internals. It can be a stock bottom end or built bottom end, but the term short block is used to have an idea what they describing. Long block means it's both the block and head, again either stock or built or mixed. Sometimes long blocks will include intake and exhaust manifolds, alternators, sensors, etc.. other times they won't, it all depends on the description associated with the term long block.
