well i got 98k and i was goin home sunday night and it started knocking really bad, dont exactly what wrong. but i gotta go through the bottom end anyways might as well build it. im lookin at the ams 2.0 shortblock. my question is: is it possible to take the motor out through the top through the hood or do i hav to drop the front subframe. if i can take it out the top it will save me alot of money and i can swap all the stuff i need offf my stock block and use on the ams short block. if any1 has any insight, PLEASE let me know.

It depends on if you have a lift or not to work on.
With a lift, I like to remove the trans and transfer case and then attack the engine to a engine stand and lift the car off the engine.
This method seems to work best for me.

yes it can come out the top, when i did it i pulled the engine and transmission as a unit.
loud knocking is probably a spun bearing, make sure you budget for all the little crap (oil cooler, oil pump, water pump, etc) cause that is the stuff that adds up fast.
also if you did in fact spin a bearing you should have your head checked out and make sure its clean and no shavings are present. you should also have it decked
you should also find out what caused the failure so it doesn't happen again, its not normal to spin a bearing at 98k and there must have been an underlying problem

98k seems like a decent amount of driving to me. There must be quite a few hard miles tacked up as well.
What is done to the car? When was the car last tuned? blah blah. There are many variables.
