Evo 9 head bolts and head gasket on evo 8?

I had a mishap with my engine in my 05 evo VIII. Since its getting rebuilt, Im curious if the evo IX head gasket and evo IX head bolts are compatible with the evo 8 head and block. Im just curious because I know the evo IX gasket is thicker, and i heard the bolts are stronger. Would it be beneficial?

Any ideas?

Please dont say do arp's and cometic gasket. thats not what im interested in.

im talking about the factory bolts that hold the head to the block, no aftermarket stuff

1) read the OP, im not doin arp, ive seen them come loose 1 too many times
2) evos come with head bolts from factory
-head bolts have a metric size head attached to the end, making it like any other bolt
-studs are rods with thread on both ends, one side screws into the block, the other size has a nut that is fastened onto it

I know from your OP that you dont want to hear this but it may have been the result of the head studs and if that is the case definately dont replace them with stockers. Get ARP's even if it wasnt from the stockers causing the damage they are only $99 bucks sometimes cheaper and ALOT stronger than the stockers..... I hope this helps

I made that thread. The 9 gasket is .040. The 8 gasket is .026. They are interchangeable. They made some slight water hole changes on the gasket but it wont matter. The water holes on the 8/9 blocks are identical. The head studs are same between 8 and 9. I have tested them to 511tq. Without lifting. Its not a boost issue, its not a turbo issue, its a cylinder pressure issue. The more torque you make the more cylinder pressure there is.

that is very helpful. Can you be more specific? You had the car at 511 awtq? would you say the IX studs are more able to handle increased cylinder pressure or not? Since AMS uses the VIII gasket on their drag car, im curious as to which gasket is more durable

If you are using stock pistons use the evo8 gasket. If you are using aftermarket pistons you should use the evo9 gasket. Stock pistons sit .070 below deck at TDC. aftermarket pistons are about .010 and sometimes very near zero at TDC. Stock pistons dont need the thicker gasket. Aftermarket pistons do.

I tested the limits of the stock studs to find the point at which arp studs are needed. They were holding the head on fine at 560whp/511tq. I dont believe the 9 head bolts are any different than 8. I was testing the 8 bolts.

No, will not work, headstuds will, but the gaskets are different you'll end up with some leaking head like crazy
