Ok Ive done it this time

I was driving back to cali yesterday and i down shifted to 4th and i got a bit of a clunk. The car acted normal but when i got off the highway to get some gas and i got on it, there was a sputtering sound coming from the tranny. I tried getting on it a bit in first and second and no issue. However today i tried it and i got that sputtering sound. Im thinking my clutch is slipping, but ive never had a clutch go out on me. Im hoping there isnt anything wrong with the tranny. Any Ideas?

Honestly I have to have the car off to get it in reverse or if i turn the car on i have to put it in gear right away. 5th most the time is smooth only grinds when im on it. I took it out again tonight and it almost sounds like somethings loose like the tranny was banging around or something when i got on it.

when you have the car on heres a little trick to get into reverse. First, put it in first then immediately reverse. does it go in? if it does its fine. Now also when you start her up put it in final gear and just let the clutch out (do this in a wide open space not in garage) if it stalls quickly your clutch is fine, if it takes a while your clutch is going. Or you can just get on it in any gear boost it and if the RPM's raise then drop back down your clutch is going.

A LOT of manual cars have problems with their reverse gear, I think someone once told me it had to do with the synchros that keep you from going into it while driving. While pushing the shifter into R, slowly let out the clutch. Our TT does it, my friend's WRX does it, 3 Evos I've driven have done it, all different years and mileage. Its a pretty common thing (My Porsche doesn't do it... but, it is a Porsche).

So pretty much there's just a sound from the tranny while driving? What gears? Power loss? Any difference felt in driving by you? What speed's the car usually going? There's a lot it could be. Reverse having problems is almost definitely not one of them, unless all 5 of those cars I drove had tranny problems...

Reverse doesnt normally have synchros hence why its hard to get into reverse sometime and why reverse is loud. It sounds like your trans. might have some serious problems. Id get it out and have it checked out ASAP.

I played with it a lot yesterday. If i get on it hard specially from a dig i get a grinding type sound. If im on the highway and i get on it, i dont get the sound as long as i dont down shift. All of the gears are hard to get into half the time, its not consistant. Sometimes they are smooth and sometimes moderate.
