I have the exedy twin also...was a little notchy...re-lubed my short shifter and that gave me a night a day difference. I've also installed the forge front motor mount and that made things even better...there is a lot of motor movement with the stock mounts. Just something to look into.

I don't think that motor mount is involved since this problem is when the car is not even moving, so its not like the engine is getting twisted under load.

I have a similar "problem" like this with my evo. It has 6500 miles on it (it is a IX MR) - I believe it has pretty much been this way since I got it in march. When I shift from 1st to 2nd when I'm just taking it easy it feels very clicky/notchy/tight getting into 2nd gear. The other gears are very smooth. If I rev the car up in 1st gear because I'm trying to accellerate and shift later under higher rpm it is always smooth. It only happens when I am taking it slow from 1st to second (shifting below 2500RPM) I thought maybe I need to extend the rod for the clutch but I had a B-I-T-C-H of a time getting that damn rod to spin and extend. I used a 6mm wrench to try and grab the flat spot on the rob but I cant get it to rotate because the bracket for the clutch-engagement button is in the way. Any tips on this one?

If you have shifter bushings installed--lube them....I have heard thats a prob..Other then that---unless there is a substantial difference in the tranny lube viscosity--nothing more to be done..Synco's when they go, can present themsleves in a number of ways--I have experienced gears popping out under load from wear...but you haven't mentioned this and all symptonms point to engagement issues..

The issue is most noticeable at a stop going into 1st or reverse. I can feel slight resistance shifting 2-5 and sometimes when I go to neutral it feels a tiny bit like it does when you try going to neutral without using the clutch where it kinda catches and then pushes you out.

For me, I still have the stock clutch. My second gear is really the only one that is different it is just slightly harder to shift into smoothly if I dont rev it up higher than 3k. It just pops in tightly.

So is this sounding more like a clutch issue???

I had a friend with a IX with a exedy twin in his and due to install error one or more of the cover bolts were tourqued in with too much tourque. The bolts ended up snapping making all sorts of noise and resulted in the same feeling that dudical and myself are experiencing.

Bad news is that it managed to damage a butt load of things in his tranny as well , with the obvious being synchro's and the like.

I installed my clutch my self and checked the torque on those bolts like 3 times. They were 13-15lbs all around, if my memory serves me.

I also made SURE not to hit the retaining clip with the output shaft from the trans so I really don't see how anything could have gone wrong. I don't hear any rattling, I will have to look through the view holes when I get back to a garage.

I dont have any rattling either so I dont think I have broke a bolt either , just putting some experienced info out there to see if anyone else has some input.

I am just trying to narrow down where the problem might be

I've had the same problem with exedy clutch on my turbo 3g eclipse. I kept taking it back to the shop so many times because it was so hard to shift into 1st and second + grinding. I did not like driving my car anymore and it only had 15k miles on it.

My shop spent hours working on that clutch and no luck, I took it to clutch doctors for a second opinion and they spent a lot of time working on it and when i picked the car up it was still the same.

Basically, both othe shops told me it was the way this clutch was designed. Since then I told myself i would never buy exedy clutch ever again.

If the car moves forward when you try putting it into gear when stopped, its dragging.

I also had a bad experience with both a Cusco twin, and an Exedy twin. Each clutch felt like *** rowing through the gears. Really, really notchy even when adjusting the rod out. I ended up selling the car though, heh.
