spoolup comparison, 35r, 30r 3076, 50trim, green, evo9, evo8

ok, so this question has been asked by thousands of people many times over and i have never really seen any definitive answers on anything.

so i have compiled data from a bunch of different turbos and put it all in the same plot so you can compare the spoolup of the different turbos side by side.

couple notes before the plot, all these were done on the stock 2.0L engine. all of these vehicles were cammed as well, although, i'm not going to list off all the different mods on each car, i'll do the most important ones.

also, the actual boost run for the different turbos isn't the same, but relatively close. you can see where the turbo reaches its maximum and that is where i would consider the turbo "spooled"

here it is:

ok, the turbos used...

the 35r is the buschur cast manifold kit with the .63 A/R turbine housing. full boost is at 4800rpm in 3rd gear on a 5speed car HKS 272/272 cams. this was an evo 8 (my own car actually)

the 30r i don't know the kit it is from, but it also has 272/272 cams, 3rd gear pull, 5speed car... this is an evo 8 also. full boost at 4500rpm

the next one is the AMS 3076 kit on an evo 9. also a cammed car, i believe it was GSC S1. this was a 6 speed car, and the pull was done it 3rd gear. full boost at 4300rpm

the next one is a ETS 50 trim kit on an evo 9. this car was also cammed with cosworths. i don't remember if it was a 5 or 6 speed, but it was again a 3rd gear pull. full boost at 4250

next is the evo green, this was on an evo 9 as well. the car had cams (cosworths). it was a 5 speed, and it was a 3rd gear pull. full boost at 3850rpm

the evo 9 car was cammed (gsc s1), stock turbo, 3rd gear, 6speed car, full boost at 3500rpm

the evo 8 car was cammed (hks 272/272), stock 8 turbo with 10.5 HS, 3rd gear, 5speed car, full boost at 3500ish rpm.

all cars had turbo back exhausts too (the 35r has a high flow cat only for emissions testing this month )

all runs were done on the street too, all with the same sensor package (zeitronix, with kavlico 50psi sensor

hopefully this information is useful to some people.

That chart looks very accurate, .

I am sure many will look at it from time to time to see boost characteristics if spool is a concern to them.

Great choice of Turbos to plot, .

I can understand your concerns, but the test does validate what we all already expect the outcome to be, no? To me it's a very good test and very useful information when trying to decide on a turbo upgrade.

Thanks Kevin!

^When I get my car back I will be able to post up a .82 30R on a 2.0/2.3 then a 35R on a 2.3. All else pretty much remaining the same.
