Tranny sound at 75mph

Hey all,

Just thought I'd get some opinions here first before I change out my drivetrain fluids this weekend.

My 03 evo developed a "whine" type sound, (almost more of a "humming" sound) when in 5th gear at 75mph (+/- 1mph). It's audible over my buschur exhaust, while the radio is off. I really never noticed it much here, until I turned my radio off (usually always have it on, fairly loud). It only makes a constant whine/hum when I hold my speed steady at about 75mph. When I accelerate or decelerate from that speed, the sound completely goes away.

Some things I read in other threads from searching the word "whine" that I have questions about:

If a wheel bearing is going out, would it only make a sound at a certain speed? I'm assuming no.

Tires making a howling/whining sound all of the sudden at a certain speed? Is this possible because the tires are getting to about 30% tread left?

Any advice would be appreciated. I've done lots of searching, but no threads with a similar problem at 75mph. I honestly think its tranny related, but I'm not ruling out anything right now.

I'm not hard on my car, don't race or track it either!

Thanks for any advice/info.

If it was your wheel bearing it you would hear it at any point while the car is in motion. It sounds like your t-case is about to fry.

Well,

One thing I can say, is the famous Death Whine vids posted, sound MUCH different than what I'm experiencing. It's almost like the normal acceleration whine in first and 2nd gears in all the 03/04 evo's I test drove.

I'll try and get a video tommorrow when I head to work and post it up!

when wheel bearings are going out they sound like a helicopter flying overhead when turning the wheel

the whine is most likely your TC

T-case man. Sheptrans.com FTMFW you can get a basic rebuild for about 400 and a helical LSD for 1095. Better to do it before you ring and pinion gears go completly....

Man, I can't believe everyone is saying Tcase...

The sound is barely audible above my buschur exhaust. I'll be posting a vid soon, if I can even hear it.

Thanks

Well, here's a vid. It may not be that helpful, but I thought I'd post it anyway.

LISTEN at about 29 seconds and beyond, don't pay attention to the begining because I'm not up to speed as of yet. It's a lower pitched hum/whine.

It's a faint sound, not loud by any means. If you can't hear it, it's understandable

Let me know....

That's kind of my point. Everyone is saying TC, yet the sound is NOTHING like the dreaded death whine that I've seen on these forums and heard.

It's very subtle, but the sound was never there in the past. That's why I'm sort of worrying now. I'm very picky and pay attention to the smallest details. Maybe I'm just worrying to much.

You have to crank your volume to hear it. Listen a couple of times and you may hear it.

Thanks.

Do you do regular maintenance with tc/trans/diff? Stock clutch or twin disc? Do you launch your car a lot?

All maintenance has been done on time, and usually early.

I've done 2 launches since I've had the car. Never tracked/raced or abused. The hardest things that I do to my car, is logging 4th gear pulls for tuning.

I honestly have NO clue how it was treated with the previous owner.

I've babied it for the 2 + years I've had it, and this sound came out of no where. I will change fluids here this weekend or next hopefully and see what happens.

Stock clutch btw still at 58k.
