I have had a similar noise and after investigating I found out it was my tires that were going bad because of uneven threads.

You know what, this could be it. I recently installed new coilovers and had it aligned.

The tech guy there told me to switch my directional tires backwards, because they were wearing strangely on the outter edges of the tires. I can't think of the term he used to describe how they were wearing. I just wonder if this is the case....

When you mean uneven treads, are you talking about the outter edges wearing unevenly? Kind of like one tread is wore down, the next is normal and the next is wore down?

Thanks!

lol lol lol

sorry that was kinda funny and i still dont fully get what you mean. If your tires are wearing unevenly like that then get an alignment or a camber kit.. im guessing your pretty slammed. wearing out the outside is negative camber. How long were you rolling on the coils before alignment? also what tires, and why are you not buckled up at 75ish mph? i mean i love to go fast, but 2 seconds of buckling could save your life.

also if you dont really know what happened... then i mean it is an evo... and you did get it used. I dont understand why your so stubborn about it possibly being the transfercase. Not every noise is the same and expecialyl through video/audio... have you ever listened to a car from a video then listening to it in person? They are pretty different.

either way good luck, if all else fails check your power steering fluid

Did you read my last post? The first thing I said is i had my car aligned after I installed my coilovers! What I meant, is the tech said that the tires were wearing unevenly on the outter edges of the tires. This is possible because I do like to take on and off ramps quickly. I really don't have much camber on my previous setup, or this one, maybe that's why. I dunno.

I'm not being stubborn about the TC. If you read any thread about whines, the first thing someone says is Transfer Case. I think most people are too quick to judge things like this, without even hearing it (or reading everything that is said).

Again, I've owned the evo for 2+ years, and never have had this sound. I understand things can happen buying a used evo, just thought I'd ask on here to get some ideas of what possibly could be wrong.

I agree about the audio part. People asked for a video/audio and I posted it. It sounds very similiar though to the vid posted.

Thanks

Mine sounds NOTHING like that. Not even close! That must be insanely loud. You can barely hear my whine over my exhaust.

I had a mitsu tech ride with me today...and now I think it just the cold weather we're having. I don't let my car warm up that much on my way to work, which is about 15 minutes.

Today when I was driving around, and my car got fully warmed up, I went to my local mitsu, explained my situation, and had a tech ride with me. You could barely even hear the whine now (being that the car was fully warmed up). The temps here in the past month have been in the 10's to 30's, and really this is when the whine started happening, with these colder temps.

I'm still changing all fluids though, just to see if anything is abnormal.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead, but the this was the closest the search came up with. Was there ever a resolution to this? My '11 RA SB just started making this same sound at the same speed.

I just put new rims on with the tires that were on my OEM wheels, now I have this noise.
