Newbie ? - How to adjust Cam gear timing?

Hi Guys,

I wanted to ask before i did anything before I did anything. I have a set of HKS 272s/Fidanza gears... They are set @ 0/0. How do I adjust it to make it -3? Do I just loosen the 5 nuts and dial it to the left? Sorry if this is a dumb ? but I just dont want to break anything.

Thank You!

Jason

I'm no expert, but can offer a bif of advice.

First of all you will want to check the torque specs for your vernier pulleys. Normally I believe it is quite low, and to be honest I feel uncomfortable torquing them down that low so would go a bit higher, but of course you don't over tighten them so use your best judgement.

Second I would definitely use loctite when fastening down again.

Third is you want to go -3... which I guess could mean you want to advance or could mean you want to retard the cam. Advancing means your making the cam events happen earlier, retarding means the events are happening later. If you can't puzzle this bit out from looking at things I'd suggest you study up on things a bit more.

Fourth is to remember one degree on a cam degree equals 2 degrees at the crank because the cam gears are about double the size of the crankshaft sprocket. This means if your HKS intake cam was set to be at peak lift at 110 degrees ATDC (after top dead center) when set straight up, then advancing it 3 cam degrees would mean you are moving peak lift to 104 degrees ATDC.

Fifth is I've been told that normally advancing an intake cam a bit will gain some torque but might lose a bit up top. I'm not sure why lol.. haven't tried to puzzle it out in my head.

Sixth is that the best way to setup cams is to degree them properly with the engine out of the car. This is because even if you set the cams straight up there can be variations in the cam itself
