Coolant leak

Ok so I parked the car today to see a large river of coolant streaming away from it. Here is the scenario best I can....

1. Loaned car out...came back with popped thermostat and no coolant...

2. Replaced thermostat...still overheating....

3. Notice large river of coolant....

4. No pressure that I can feel in the upper radiator hose....

5. Leak seems to be coming from above/near the oil filter area (Best description I can give)

6. I am assuming it is a bad/faulty water pump.

Please confirm or deny.

Thanks

Seth

Have you pressure checked the cooling system for any leaks?

If you can't find the source it must be a small river. Maybe look in daylight?!?

there's nothing up in that area aside from the water pump. Could still be a bad gasket with the main return tube, but it's going to take alot of dissassembly either way.

OK guys thanks. I am going to say it is the water pump...

While it's disassembled I'm going to check everything else too.

I'm doing shep trans/tcase, cams cam gears and turbo at the same time....

As for the smart ***...It was daylight. Wherever it is leaking from is not obvious it is higher up than I can see....

Frost plug behind the water pump caused by blown head gasket.

Well, it would help if I knew what the original cause of the loss of coolant was. You report it had a popped thermostat. I'm not sure what that means. If you mean the thermostat failed to open then you are saying the engine overheated. You report the car came back with no coolant. That means it was very overheated. Very overheated almost always warps the head. Once the head warps the head gasket blows and vents a combustion chamber to the water jacket. You reporting that it continues to overheat is pretty good evidence for a blown head gasket. I know there is a frost plug behind the water pump. I also know that this plug has been a problem on certain IX's.

So, this is what I am basing my guess on.

You should open your hood and look then. Maybe get a mirror and a light.

I have a with my bypass coolant line going into my turbo. Its the small one that is on top of the turbo and it leaks every time I give it some gas. I tightened up the fittings and it still leaks under boost.
